Why has Murali Vijay been given so many chances?

we all know he struggles to play on backfoot which is very important on bouncy tracks . He does not hook or pull. I wonder what makes the team management to give continuous chances to vijay!!. they should give chances to yusuf instead of this out of form player vijay.

Vijay should focus on Tests. Yes he struggles a bit against good quality attacks in difficult conditions. Who wouldn't. But he is better there. Involved in two 40 plus partnership under difficult conditions. But in one dayers requirements are different. You sure can take time to settle down. But you should make it count at the end. Vijay is simplay capable of not lasting more than 10 overs. So why bother playing him.

Maybe because Vijay is doing Jadeja's work for MSD :dontknow: Otherwise I do not understand this infatuation of MSD for Vijay instead of never being able to accelerate or even last for more than a handful of overs in ODIs. Vijay is good batsman for tests but dont understand the logic of pushing him in ODI format where he has never performed even a bit after being the opener. Leave apart Yusuf even Jadeja would have at least got a good average if he was sent opener in every match. Vijay has an average of 19 even after being an opener for all games he has played and that itself tells about his capabilities as an ODI batsman. An opener normally has more average than the rest of the team because he can play long in every match if he has the talent to do so.

My biggest fear is that MSD might even take him in the world cup squad especially with "CSK" Srikanth as the chief selector. Hope that they do not do that mistake too. Even Rohit is a lot better than Vijay. For that matter even Ravindra Jadeja is a Sachin compared to Vijay in ODI cricket. If Jadeja would have sent as opener in every match he would at least have got an average of 30 though maybe at a terrible strike rate. But I am still sure that he might have still done better than Vijay's epic strike rate of 64 in ODIs. It is only MSD and Srikanth who can play Vijay match after match after an epic average of 19 at an epic strike rate of 64 in ODIs. That record is infact rare to fiind in ODIs leave apart as an opener. :winky:

IPL performance is directly proportional to playing for India. Here's how- 1. A player plays at XYZ franchise. The captain of a national team plays in the league, maybe even in the same franchise. 2. As they work together, they establish a healthy working and maybe social/personal relationship. 3. Since the player and the skipper relate better to each other having worked with each other, the name starts to float around selection committee meetings. 4. If the National Chief Selector also happens to be associated with the same franchise, he has that level of "confidence", for the lack of a better word to describe the trait, in the player. 5. He starts getting picked for games and generally gets persisted with longer than, say another player, who might be equally or more talented. 6. Even after having poor tours against the likes of Zimbabwe, the player manages to retain his slot. 7. After like 4 bad games, the player manages to score a 50 and the player's knock gets the validation from the skipper, who knows him really well (step 1,2,3). 8. Hence, he hangs on. Alternative for Vijay- I'd pick Dinesh Karthik (this guy fights it out in the middle. He's an awesome pick even when in 50% form.

Not really. He had a good IPL last year. His domestic/FC Ltd overs record is about on par as the other real contenders- Dhawan, Mukund and Rahane. The other options I guess are open with Kohli, which may not be ideal given he is a long term middle order bat and Uthappa is not exactly in great form right now. MV has (kinda) shown that he cope with international cricket in the longer version so he deserves a chance in ODIs, however I agree he has had it now and can be jettisoned. I think for Rahane. I think Kartik has suffered a bit from being shunted anywhere in the lineup- he too is a middle order bat and should play at 4 or 5, his versatility in this case led to his downfall I think. Though I do agree he should be in the squad at least.
