Jersey #10 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 You can roughly calculate it by doing Distance/Time The length of the pitch is 22 yards = 0.0201168 kilometers Basically obtain the time it takes the ball to go from the hands of the bowler to the batsman. Now convert the time from seconds to hour. And then plug it into the formula 0.0201168 / Time(h) = speed of the bowler

If We have a video of say 250 frames per sec I think we can tell the speed of the bowler with good accuracy . That would mean that we are dividing 0.5 seconds into 125 parts.

For accurate measurement: Even if you get good frame rates, you still need to know the position of the camera relative to the pitch, or relative position of two cameras capturing the ball delivery simultaneously. For rough estimate - If you can get a continuous shot of ball crossing the pitch or a big section of it(pitch). Then you can roughly get the time it took to cross that from the video frames. Unless you are well funded, it will require quite some resources to make a software to do that for you. That too, given that for older videos (in fact for most of the public domain videos) - the frame rate is quite less and hence speed calculations will be off by huge margin. Add to that the error in estimating the the exact point of entry/exit of the ball on the pitch (due to camera angles and again low frame rates). So, for now, best option would be manually record the time by watching whatever video sources you have - in slowest motion possible. (Typical videos are no more than 30 frames /sec.)
The Outsider Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 In addition to things already mentioned : 1. The speeds that you see today are delivery speeds. Using videos the best you can hope for is the average speed, which would be significantly lower, because of air friction and of course bounce. 2. You would need multiple camera angles to get anywhere close to an accurate figure - the release point will be different for each delivery, and so will the impact point. You would need square on cameras to calculate the distance accurately. Even around a meter error in measurement, can give you an 8-10 kmph error in speed.

Short balls show slower speeds because the speed guns only measure the horizontal component of the velocity, which is lesser for short balls than full ones.

Contact with the ground decreases the speed if I'm not wrong.
