I am pretty sure ICC's rule and regulations ( you can find them here - http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/rules_and_regulations.php) were updated to include or modify the anti-corruption clauses only AFTER the match fixing fiasco of 1999. You can only take action on someone by what the law at that particular time enables you to do so. So if you laws are weak, like it seemed they were during the Waugh-Warne episode, players can get away with lighter sentences. So taking the case of Waugh-Warne itself, if a player were to commit a similar offence today, it will be in direct violation of clause 2.3 of ICC's code of conduct for the players, specifically the clause 2.3.2 which defines mis-use of inside information as the following - Disclosing Inside Information to any person (with or without Reward) before or during any International Match or ICC Event where the Player or Player Support Personnel might reasonably be expected to know that disclosure of such information in such circumstances could be used in relation to Betting. Under the present rules, the violation of these clauses now have a minimum sentence of 2 years and a maximum of 5.

I have said this before and will say this again There were two brazen crooked cricket boards pre-2000 -- one was CA and other ofcourse PCB. These two boards would go any lengths to save/protect their players -- no matter what crime they committed. Except CA always walked with caution unlike stupid PCB. CA always took advantage of loop holes in the law and surreptiously took advantage of laws, while PCB did it brazenly without any concern. But make no mistake both of these bloody boards did a lot of things which were far from being moral. I guess as ICC got stricter over the years -- CA changed, while PCB which was stuck in the stone-age paid no heed -- until the last episode where they were shown a gun to their head. Lathon ke bhoot bathon se nahin manthe. Going back to Mark Waugh and Shane Warne -- who on the bloody earth will believe that they met bookies to give them weather information. Oh, as I speak -- Shane Warne is also meeting Liz Hurley to have a cup of tea :winky: Azhar to this day says he was innocent -- why was he banned ? Simply because after a while the Cack and Bull stories don't hold ground !
