Even now they talk about Australia being no.1 team in 1948. :winky: More importantly if your team is no.1 as a fan you will remember for the rest of your life. I don't say world cup is not important. But talk of "no.1 ranking is not important" is total bull. I know for a fact there was one BD fan started thread for "Bangladesh has reached 8th ranking in ODIs". yeh its a combination of both actually. look at sri lanka, they won in 1996 and still keeping that tag. what I am saying is that IND should care about the world cup bc it's a important tourney and winning it would just compliment their #1 team tag greatly.

I remember when people were saying the same thing when Aus were #1 ranked test side in the world, now look at us, we are strugglinh in tests.. So no way am I bored! Really hope we win it again! Gonna be tough now though, no where near as good as the previous teams which had players like Gilly, Hayden, Warne, McGrath, Ponting at his best, Hussey at his best, Symonds at his best.. Tait and Lee bowling beautifully must I go on, we were practically unstoppable.. Now the side is far from unstoppable, our middle order is struggling, our bowling is a big concern for this tournament.. But we can't be written off, just simply cause it's Australia :two_thumbs_up:

If we win this worldcup, we will truly be number 1 and the whole world will acknowledge it and it will go down in the history and future generations will call this the golden era of indian cricket. No one will remember 20 years from now, if we were number 1 in tests for a couple of years now.

If we could remain no. 1 for 2-3 more years, then people will always remember it as the golden period of Indian cricket and will remember more than 83. Even though we won world cup in 83, that would always be considered as WI's time. Whenever people will talk about 80's cricket, they'll always talk about WI cricket and then Pakistan cricket. Indian world cup victory in 83, would always be a foot note for world cricket. My counter question to your question would be? Which team gets more respect from world cricket? 1. Indian cricket team of early 80's 2. Indian cricket team of 2009-11. Basically what I want India to achieve is complete dominance in world cricket and for which WC win will be very helpful, but it is not mandatory. WC win would be something like French Open win for Federer. Even if he had not won at Rolland Garros in '09, he would have been an all time great (probably greatest ever). French Open win would have provided more satisfaction and happiness to Federer, but it did not help much to prove his greatness.

Indian cricket team of 2009-11. Why am I that concerned about respect from World cricket? I care about what brings joy to me as a fan and other Indian fans. There is no question that a WC victory will mean a lot more to the majority of the fans out there. Now coming back to the respect factor, despite being #1, we still get no respect. Oh you've never beat SA in SA, oh Eng has better bowling than your team, yada yada yada. When we won in 1983, even though people called it a fluke then, even after 28 years we still keep talking about it. And yes, I do agree with Reetkiptanisk. :giggle:
