Kriterion Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 age old question perhaps, especially since the advent of T20s...but with India recently taking the top spot in Test cricket, how important is the world cup?
Manny_Pacquiao Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 utmost. reasons why: 1. quadrennial tournament. one shot every four years. cricketers might need to wait their entire careers to win one. 2. unites entire country in a way test matches cant. altho i suppose the ashes is comparable in terms of the respective countries' fan following. but the world cup is the real deal, and followed by ppl from every country 3. from an indian point of a view, it's more important than anything because: a) india hasnt won it since 1983, and b) the current generation is one of the very best and they deserve a world cup to complete the list of titles they have won 4. india's planning for the world cup began back in 2008. failure to win would mean 3 years of effort amounting to nothing. 5. public and media pressure is far bigger in a world cup than for any test series. playing well here means a lot more to the ppl. test cricket wins mean more to the enthusiasts but majority of ppl wont care about india smashing south africa at durban test cricket is still the best form of the game and winning a big test series is more difficult than winning a world cup, but in terms of importance world cup is second to none
BERGKAMP Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Normally i'm buzzing before a world cup and can't wait for it, but it is different this time, I just can't get up for it with the same enthusiasm for some reason. Maybe it will change once the tournament starts..
Ashrafool Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 No one will remember IND being #1 test team...but everyone remembers you if you win the world cup. Even if Ireland win the cup all of us will rememberem for a long time.

Sooda Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 IMO being test no 1- and staying there for some time hopefully- would top the WC. If I had a choice between the two I would take beating England in Eng over a WC win...
Desi Cartman Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I only care because I want Sachin Tendulkar to lift the trophy before retiring .. thats all !
Raghav_12 Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 IMO being test no 1- and staying there for some time hopefully- would top the WC. If I had a choice between the two I would take beating England in Eng over a WC win... Almost same. Nobody talks about Indian team of early 80's the way they talk about WI team of early 80's. I would take dominance for a long time over sporadic WC win. Hhowever may not value a series win in Eng as much as series wins in SA or Aus.
Ashraful_Rox Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I only watch the Ashes, so world cup is not that Important. Wait I am not an English fan, so World cup most important tournament after WWE Survivor Seies.
Baad Indian Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 well the world cup is the biggest stage of them all and no bilateral Test-Odi series can ever come close , its the stage where all the cricket playing nations are involved , fans from all the countries are watching it and cricketers are trying to won one big trophy . During no Bilateral series can you expect so many people watching the action where only 2 teams are involved compared to world cup where everyone is involved
yoda Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Rankings are temporary. The WC win is etched forever. Ask Federrer or Nadal if they care about their Slam wins or about when they were ranked #1. The answer will be obvious. Same here. That said, you don't want to win a WC and then start sucking in tests. :hehe:
nballa Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 you should ask this question after this wurld cup is over and you will get more honest answers along the lines of 'test series win against england in england is more important than winning the wc' 'test series win against aus in aus is more important than winning the wc' 't20 wc win is more important than odi wc' etc etc.

Jersey #10 Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 by far the most important cricketing event
ravishingravi Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Can't recall when I was less interested in WC. I want India to win but it is such long drawn out tournament now which is effectively reduced to winning 3 matches.

Even if Ireland win the cup all of us will rememberem for a long time. well i remember Australia being no. 1 team. Even now they talk about Australia being no.1 team in 1948. :winky: More importantly if your team is no.1 as a fan you will remember for the rest of your life. I don't say world cup is not important. But talk of "no.1 ranking is not important" is total bull. I know for a fact there was one BD fan started thread for "Bangladesh has reached 8th ranking in ODIs".
Bradman99 Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 If you're number one for a long period of time, like Australia and West Indies had been, that's when being #1 maybe has more significance then winning the world cup. However, India have been there for just over a year now, they have a long way to go. For me though, the world cup is the most exciting thing about cricket. Also, winning it 4 times in a row (if Australia can do it) would be amazing. However, I think it will be very difficult this year, my favourites for the competition are certainly Ind & Sri followed by SA & Aus..
