Do NRIs pass the Tebbit test ?

This wasnt really a comment on economic or socio standards, just a thread to see how other NRIs are outside India. Many of us born and bred in UK follow Indian cricket but English football. Its our choice whom we follow not dictated by where we live but the passion in our hearts and there is nothing that will ever change this. The debate in the UK around multi culturalism is really about the growing "distrust" there is of Islam in the UK, although this extends to the rest of europe. I dont want to start a debate on this subject, as my qustion was really to ascertain how others outside of my friends and family born and bred here in the UK and beyond feel about cricket. My view is each to their own and lets not be too quick to judge. I have many white british friends who now live in places such as Canada, Oz etc and they all support England, Scotland etc whether it be in footie or cricket.

Like I have said many times before ... you guys need to find an exit from the LaLa land that you live in. in b4 the sher-e-forum comes in and locks this thread and announces that there are wonly 0.01% bad apples and that the Hindus comfortably out number the bad apples from any other community :hysterical: :cantstop:

Multiculturalism is an epic :fail: . Allegiance to culture is burned into our psyche and no amount of "upbringing" and "environment" can change that. No wonder, inspite of being born in england, NRI's support our team. Same goes to pakistan. They consider themselves as a representative, not of pakistan, but of the muslims in the sub-continent. Even a substantial amount of indian muslims are die hard supporters of pakistan. In 1992, when pakistan won the world cup, there were celebrations in Hyderabad's Old city... IMO, Some Indian Muslims who are tired of discrimination in India(it exists) support Pakistan team. When I lived in India, my dad had a couple of Muslim friends who quite frankly and verbally supported Pakistani team. I used to think that all Muslims would be doing the same until I got a chance to live in Canada for a few years. I became very close friends with three Indian Muslim kids who were die hard friends of team India. They were stronger fans of team India than some of the other Hindu-Indians.

I have seen Englishmen support England whenever they tour West Indies. Even in soccer, many fans support the countries they originally belong to. Because even though you live in a foreign country, you are identified by your culture or the country you came from and you root for a team which represents that. Its not a big deal really.

Im a muslim of Indian origin living in the UK and I pretty whole heartedly support India. I do not like Pakistan and the Pakistan team and was dissapointed they won yesterday. When I go in to work tomorrow I will definitely be asked who I was supporting-'why India..' etc etc. I do not know tbh the answer to that seeing that I am more English than Indian. I guess being of Asian origin gives us the luxury of that choice. If you are born and brought up here (I wasnt) and do not share so much in common with India beyond physical appearance then it is a hard one to explain and those people would support England. I know a Brit-Indian of Sikh background who supports England. Very rare that, and those rare exceptions are more likely to be indians as opposed to Pakistanis. Also I dont think the Tebbit test (which also applies to Carribbean descent people here) says much about whether you share British 'values' (whatever those are). I fail the Tebbit test. Doesent make me a crappy British national.

If there is a match between India and the country where I live and work in, I'd definitely be supporting the latter !! atleast that much I owe a nation where I earn my bread and butter..
