vvvslaxman Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I think lot of captains take it for granted. other day Both Strauss and Dhoni were chasing the batsmen. Wherever the ball goes they put a fielder there without any logical thought process. Dhoni has been the culprit of this whenever we defended high scores. He is far more attacking when we defend a small totals where he is forced to attack. Why can't he do the same when he defends high totals. Good field set can make even average bowler look good and vice versa. I recall an instance. It was 2007 first ODI against Pakistan in India. Kamran Akmal was cutting the ball well. Ganguly was standing at the point ball hit straight to him and he dropped a sitter. Then he placed Viru at the same place only little closer almost in the face of Kamran. Kamran went for the next cut shot. Pouched by Viru effortlessly. It was not really a great wicket taking delivery. Just placing the right man in the right place. I don't say Ganguly was a genius in field placement. He sucked big time in that area overall in his career. Dhoni's ultra relaxed approach when it comes to field setting especially when we defend big totals is not helping India one bit. If am right he informallly has designated Zak as bowling captain who does the job of talking to his fellow fast bowlers . He better designates somebody to overlook field set as well if he is not going to do.
Sid Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 He has to be attacking in the middle overs and stops those easy singles ,not only while defending big totals but also while bowling first.This phenonmenon of spread out fields and giving easy singles in middle overs is a problem with every modern day captain. But it was good to see Porterfield attacking with fielders in the circle in the game against England.If Porterfield can do it why Dhoni cant .He should also try it for 3-4 overs ,rather than letting the game meandering along with those irritating singles.And I agree he should be proactive in his field placing rather than being reactive ,like he was in that tied game . But Bhajji's role is very crucial in this,he has to bowl attacking line ,rather than darting his way to 10-0-58-1 in every match .

Dhoni had absolutely no fielder there right through his innings. He just said "he kept hitting there we couldn't stop him" I was like "why don't you place a fielder" there. Exactly that is what happened with Strauss who kept targeting midwicket. Similarly Kyle Mills and Southee launched into a late order onslaught in NZ. They scored 97 runs in 7 overs. Dhoni had absolutely no clue to where to place the fielders. It is not an overstatement to say that Dhoni sometimes make our bowlers look worse than they actually are.

Sid Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Mills and Southee partnership which you are talking about was more due to poor bowling from Munaf rather poor field setting ,he kept on bowling half volleys and if I remember correctly bowled a beamer as well. One more game was our match against Pak in Champions Trophy ,both Yousuf and Malik kept on playing cut shots and Dhoni not even once had point or deep point fielder to stop that :wall:

Ya Gauti was really impressive but cant make much of it ,it was only against kiwis and the bowler was Ashwin not Bhajji :--D

maniac Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Field setting is very important to change a course of the game....I was really impressed with Sammy's captaincy yesterday when he kept attacking the bangbros without giving away freebies... Often I have seen Dhoni give away easy singles without trying to apply the pressure.One prime example was in our Champions trophy loss to Pak,when parttimers were bowling and giving away easy singles when Pak had lost quick wickets. The last two times Dhoni has been successful was during powerplay when he as forced to bring men in...for eg;against SA in the 3rd ODI and even against England in the tied game.
