vvvslaxman Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 While making fun of Kamran ..I think Genuine/Specialist Wicketkeepers are things of past..Now you have to be good batsman to be considered as Wicketkeeper. For India last specialist keeper I would say was kirmani...England it was Bob Taylor...and so on. None of the modern keepers (all test playing nations) are natural keepers..some of them developed as good keepers over a period of time like Mark Boucher but look at Matt Prior' date=' Kamran Akmal,Dhoni...they are keepers bcos of their batting but to be fair they also don't have any better keepers in their country ![/quote'] Kirmani? Do you know how much he sucked in the 70s. He was a terrible keeper. Only in the later part of his career he developed himself into a decent keeper. Sadanand viswanath and to some extent Mongia were the best. Dhoni has definitely improved a lot. His stumpings are awesome to watch.

singhprakash72 Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Kirmani was quite safe as far as I remember, he rarely dropped sitters ...since I started watching early 80s he was pretty safe except in one or two matches with england in 1985 home series ...which allowed Sadanand Viswanath to arrive in 1985 WCCin Aus...but truly he was average with just one good championship, after that he pretty much fell apart. I remember he missed couple of sitters during the Rothmans cup immediately after WCC in Sharjah. Mongia was good to spinner especially Kumble but he was pathetic to fast bowlers for left take collection (takes down on right hander legside or on off side for left hander). Kiran More was pretty much the same ..Mongia better batsman which India didn't use to full potential. Dhoni is still the best we have now in India ...but not the greatest India produced. Again with his batting he is an asset and does a decent job to grab most chances...but to me a great keeper is like Alan Knott or Rod Marsh or Ian Smith who convert half chances out of no where ...which Dhoni is NOT.

He dropped Richards 2 or 3 times in addition to missing stumping off venkatragavan in 1976 series who punished us badly. Then he dropped Kallicharan. It was a horror series. He gradually improved. Later part of his career he was really good unlike Khatmal who has played for 8 years , is looking worse than when he was new.

He lacks discipline, often throws away his wicket, and is very edgy. He was never a good batsment, except in the twenty20 format Why do you people insists on deceiving yourselves!

The guy goes wicketless against Nethrelands? What Ashwin you guys are talking about, shuld have played him. I don't think we will ever reach the quarterfinal, we got bundled out for 58 runs against the West Indies. I care less about you bundling out Pakistan, I just think there surely must be a better spinner than Harbajhan. The guy hardly spins the balls, he seems like a medium pacer, he will get hit for some serious runs soon
