DomainK Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 The topic of this thread is "Michael Atherton takes a dig at Dhoni." That's exactly what he did. And Atherton is no professional writer...he's just an opinionated pundit like several others. I didn't say a professional writer. I said an expert writing a professional piece. He is taking money for expressing his opinion as an expert. Are you seriously comparing a forum post in jest with an expert's published professional opinion? Unbelievable.
Homerus_Unus Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Sorry I was about to mention just joking at the end of the sentence you quoted in the post but I forgot due to typo. I was just joking on that part. Couldn't Atherton be extended the same courtesy for an excuse? What...you think he can't engage in a little "j/k" kinda sarcasm? I am not attacking Atherton but his attitude towards Indian cricket and cricketers and BCCI and anything remotely related to India has been highly derogatory to say the least. I forgot the name of the English newspaper where he used to post but he tried his best to bring down India whenever he could. I am not referring to just this case but I have been noticing him columns and articles in various websites and he tries every bit to pull down India. I have posted a few of his articles a couple of years ago on ICF to show the same. I am not citing this single incident but his anti-India rhetoric as a whole. You and several others need to calm down, mate. If he truly is virulently anti-Indian like you and others claim, then he wouldn't write this: "Yuvraj, who often in the past has given the impression of someone who would shy away from, rather than revel in, a taut finish, played majestically in company with Raina. Gradually, India`s challenge is looking more and more serious.†Atherton said off-spinner R Ashwin`s inclusion has added variety to the Indian attack. "Ravichandran Ashwin is a good addition to the bowling attack -- adding variety, a fierce competitive streak and an ability to bowl in the powerplay overs -- while Raina`s presence alongside Kohli has increased their athleticism in the field." Source: http://cricket.zeenews.com/worldcup2011/story.aspx?nid=37053 If you read the above source, you'll realize the article is a hodge-podge of various Atherton quotes- most likely made during the game on a live commentary feed on Cricinfo or Skysports, or Fox Sports, etc.- put together by a 3rd party. It's not one single contiguous piece put together by Atherton as a post-match assessment...thereby negating any "professionalism" associated with the piece. The OP decided to cherry-pick the part that he perceived was anti-Dhoni/Indian and hilarity ensues.

Are you seriously comparing a forum post in jest with an expert's published professional opinion? Unbelievable. What's unbelievable is your inability to discern a professionally written piece from one that isn't. There is no by-line to indicate who wrote it (as any professional news article should) and therefore, what it truly is is most likely a hodge-podge of in-game quotes by Atherton, put together by an anonymous 3rd party. Check out the site I posted.

The search function has been disabled on ICF as of now or I would have shown the old threads about Atherton too where he continues with his anti-India rant. Leave apart others, there are a few English websites where Atherton is the sports columnist and just check out how much he has tried to have a dig at India. Maybe when the search function returns I will guide you to those threads.

Maybe when the search function returns I will guide you to those threads. Well.... you need to do a lot better than show a few articles where Atherton has taken a few digs at us. Sorry, but that's hardly enough evidence to paint someone as anti-Indian. Everyone takes a dig at the other in sports. Just read Aussie pieces in their papers on Poms in the Ashes- professionally written and yet, deliciously tongue-in-cheek and scathing. I don't hear any bawling from the Poms over this. Why should we throw a hissy-fit over a non-issue like this? So Atherton has an opinion....big friggin' deal! Deal with it.

Why should we throw a hissy-fit over a non-issue like this? So Atherton has an opinion....big friggin' deal! Deal with it. It he takes a dig at us once that is ok, if it is twice then also that makes sense but if his anti-India digs continues unabated then it is intentional for sure. I have read columns where he had insulted Indian cricketers, fans, IPL and maybe what not. Come on! Nobody has bloody asked him about IPL nor is he remotely related to IPL or its management in any capacity. He praises county cricket as if it is the best thing to happen in the world of cricket but takes unnecessary digs at IPL too all the time. At first I do not understand why is he so much interested in commenting on various IPL matters if he does not like the league and feels county cricket is the only one good thing in cricket. He does not take an occasional dig but taking digs at anything related to India seems a regular occurrence. He behaves as is he is the most knowledgeable cricketer around and English are the best and their domestic cricket is the best and their players and team are the best and it is exactly the opposite for India. I understand his bias towards his own country being an Englishman and we also have highly biased cricket experts here in India too but they do not take digs at the English for a living like Atherton does.
Serani Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Apparently' date=' he also believes that Indian fans are the most immature ones.[/quote'] What is wrong with that article? You set a bloody stadium on fire, immature is being kind.
bear23 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 I agree with Atherton, but the next game is the perfect setting for Dhoni

And he's absolutely spot-on regarding how immature Indian fans are. I have no issues whatsoever with that assessment of his. - No one is stopping our biased experts from taking digs at the English. That said Gavaskar sure said something about Aussies getting bashed up in a bar or something like that, vis-a-vis David Hookes. Yeah, our s*** stinks too, buddy.
rkt.india Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Yaar he had scored a blistering 100 in warm up game...its just he has not been getting enough time to bat in the middle in this world cup...either he is coming in slog overs or like it happened against Oz..2-feet away form Clark and that was a 4....that was not a bad shot...bowl was there to be hit, its went straight to fielder that was his bad luck, like Kohli got out on a full toss
Prakat Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Well done, Atherton. You may have to take our money to commentate on IPL but you certainly don't have to like us.
gsivak Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Atherton is actually an intellectual and smart guy but he does have something against India and Indians. I remember reading his articles in Times Online (which are well written and informative if we look past his anti-India rants) where he seems very distressed about the attention and money Indian players get. I am not sure if he is just an old school guy who believes too much money is bad or if he is just unhappy with the shift in power structure. The most insane article he wrote was about why British Asian players haven't fulfilled their potential - it is not the system it is the fact that they eat an unhealthy diet of chapati, rice and Indian curries. It got me wondering, what does he think Tendulkar, Gavaskar and other Indian players eat?
Hell Raiser Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Who cares about what English commies say about us. They are most biased commies anyway.
Schickelgruber Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Baseless articles. Athers is an idiot... yeah Dhoni is struggling but so do all players, it's natural so just deal with it.
Ramzz Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Why do posters worry or give two hoots about what commies from another country say? We know that we are much better than them. Don't give them attention and they will fade away. Let them die with jealousy if they so wish :P
diegovegaz Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 he's quite right i see dhoni more in advertisements, than at the crease
King Tendulkar Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Atherton and Nasser have an agenda. Their anti India stance bourne out of pure jealously of our might on and off the field. This is like the miilionth time these tow clowns have took subtle and often not subtle attacks on India. They cant handle the shifting of power in every dept to India. Chappell also has it to a certain extent, as well as most of SA comms
