Well said Gunner, I have seen similar kind of excuses when a tourist is molested in India and then we protest when other countries advise their citizens deeming our country unsafe. Even then the excuse is the same, it was only one or two excitable teenagers. Nothing condones racial abuse. Such incidents are highlighted so much when it happens to Indians abroad. What a hue and ccry we made when Indians were attacked in Australia. But in India racial discrimination is not considered a big deal

Racism is bad, period. Like "my two cents" said, we Indians (mostly the media) are the first ones to jump and start playing the victim of racial abuse (like in Australia), even though many of the highlighted incidents are just criminal incidents and not racist. But surely hurling abuses in a cricket ground is not an out of the world incident. I have been to many matches in Delhi and Bangalore and it happens every time. Most of the time the players dont understand it. sometimes its just simple jibes. I am pretty sure it happens all over the world. though that doesnt justify it, there will always be few such people in the ground. I would draw the line at throwing physical objects and hurling racist remarks.

Where is that line when a jibe turns to a racist taunt? You are clearly not getting the point, I have no issues with the crowd making fun of an opposition player. But after winning the match going around town screaming abuses is not on. If this match had been held in Delhi every woman in our great capital would have been raped on Saturday night as a form of celebration.

I don't deem India as unsafe, it is unsafe. Every time my sister travels to Delhi I am worried, I have even advised her to get a licensed gun. If I had a grown up daughter I would be terified everyday looking at the condition in some parts of India. I am relatively more confident of safety etc in Mumbai and Bangalore. The other cities are more worrisome.

If anything, Chennai needs to man the F up. I remember an IPL match vs DC, where they were cheering every four hit by Gilchrist n co. FFS! I was p!ssed off to say the least :mad: :hehe:

are you forgetting our telugu neighbours who work here or ppl of telugu origin? they fill up almost half of chennai! infact the likes of chiranjeevi and vijayshanthi were based here before hyderabad started developing.

Making fun of opposition players is ok but racial abuse is not on. Even in Lko after the match I went out to celebrate and I saw many young men riding on bikes shouting slogans of "Pakistan murdabad" (and these after the final, which was against Sri Lanka) and plenty of racial slogans etc - I don't understand what is the need for all this?? Your team has become the World Champions, go and celebrate the occasion.

But you gotta at least back your own team and not make the opposing team comfortable at our "home ground"

the chennai crowd also has banter or gives some stick to the opposition. i remember crowd exchaging thumbs down signs with steve waugh and matthews in the tied test of 1986. ppl were carrying a skeleton effigy and named it bruce reid, the tall aussie fast bowler! in 2004, again i remember ppl calling out to langer saying his team is going down. lot of these thngs happen. however the crowd does applaud shotmaking by the opposition especially if its windies of the 80's.

yeah i should know. i used to play cricket in my maternal home with my cosuins and ppl from andhra arrived every weekend to our gate interrupting our play , asking directions to chiranjeevi or vijayshanthi. i used to point signs this way, that way(chiranjeevi opposite the road to the following street,vijayshanthi the next block).after the 90s' it stopped ofcourse as they left their base.

I agree. Women+Huge crowds+ Rowdy youth is a recipe for disaster in India. My only wish is rather than punishing the victims by not letting them to go out (lot of families do that), we improve our security during such events and also the overall outlook of society which is still stuck around 20 years behind the developed world.
