lolz, India didn't even try to chase that total..But anyways, that would have been impossible against Marshall, Roberts and Holding.

I know. But they were supposed to try to win even if against that attach they had next to none chance.. This scorecard reminds me of famous WC 75 match against Eng, where India had declined to attempt chasing England's similar score in 330's, courtsey Gavaskar (but he did better here :-))

Actually asking rate was way way out of their hand. Then India scored some freebie runs of their second string bowlers. The mentality those days were not like these days. Bats were not like these days. You really had to time it. It is like asking current teams to chase a total of 500.

I understand man it was way way beyond capacity of that indian team, but in any case i find it hard to justify not to try right from the start. It is some stuff that minnows like Kenya do when they are put against a chase of 350 or so. (But may be they tried a bit. Initial batsmen had a strike rate around 100.)

The story is that the series was originally planned to be played across 1983 and 1984 as was the convention. Usually Delhi used to host the Christmas Test, Calcutta New Year and Madras Pongal (Jan 15). Apparently West Indies insisted that the series be completed in 1983 itself and therefore the last test ended on Dec 29. The story goes that West Indies did this so that they could have their revenge the same year. But it is probably apocryphal. WI played in the WSC in Australia in January.

a. One bad day against Pakistan b. Gavaskar retired as captain after the WCC, so Kapil became captain from then till the 1987 WC.
