That will make the batting stronger. dont think SL selectors will do a change in keeping since prasanna jayawardena did nothing bad in previous tours . they will give another chance to him and may be chandimal will play only as a batman . he have a good record in domestic and A team matches to score big runs .

PJ can smoke the spinners and short bowling but when it's pitched up he struggles big time. Kaushal SIlva would be the ideal to replace PJ, while Chandimal to replace Mathews. Missing Mathews is a HUGE loss, because he's one of the better players of pace, and plays it with disdain too.

Averages 35 with the bat (two fifties in 13 Tests), 70 with the ball in Test cricket. Excellent limited overs player but you are overrating him big time in Tests.

Only 1 reserve batsman, right? Looking forward to watching Chandimal. Also heard good things about Thirimanne. How good is he? Both of them played against India recently I think.

And BTW how many matches he has played? If he can average 40-45 in Tests then fair enough, but he isn't at this stage. There are plenty of players who look promising but don't fulfil their talent.

Dilshan to reach England by May 11 Monday, 02 May 2011 Tillakaratne Dilshan, Sri Lanka's newly-appointed captain, will leave the IPL early and join the national squad in England on May 11, three days ahead of the first tour game against Middlesex. The decision was reached after negotiations between the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in the last week. "He will be there on May 11," Nishantha Ranatunga, the SLC secretary, said, confirming the news. The early departure will mean Dilshan will miss his franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore's last four league matches, as well as the knockouts, if they get that far. He will be available for Bangalore's two home games on May 6 and May 8. His form in the IPL so far has been poor; he has scored only 120 runs in seven innings at a strike-rate of 103.44. The development was positive as far as Dilshan was concerned after he had expressed a strong desire to arrive in England early for his first assignment as Test captain. Dilshan wanted to spend time with the rest of the squad, as well as the new coach Stuart Law, appointed in an interim position for the England tour after Trevor Bayliss' contract came to an end with the World Cup. Five Sri Lanka players will stay on in the IPL and miss the Middlesex game. The board called in Farveez Maharoof and wicketkeeper Kaushal Silva to provide cover for them. Nuwan Pradeep, the fast bowler who has not yet played for Bangalore in the IPL, is also expected to arrive early in England.

He has gone past the three figure mark twise while Sanga is yet to score a hundred there. Also, Mahela has scored hundred each in both the two-match test series he had in Australia. From similar no of matches Sanga has only one hundred and also it's a big one (197) to hype his average. But yes, overall Snaga is the more reliable from the two on those conditions because he gets starts very regularly, one of the best starters in his era. And Mahela normally struggle to past that difficult initial period. So he has plenty of very low scores. If the openers with Sanga could play the first 20-25 overs, Mahlea is going to have some big runs.

Mathews had a very successful entrance into first-class cricket in Sri Lanka. So because of that most SL fans think he can do well in test cricket as well. But if u take Sanga's record his test average is almost 10 runs higher than his first-class average. That shows our first-class cricket doesn't give the right picture about a batsman. We have to wait and see how Mathews perform in test cricket before hyping him as a wannabe great.. :dontknow: I think Kaushal Silva could be a better test batsman than Mathews if they give him the opportunity before it's too late.. :((

I'm not a big follower of our domestic cricket or the school cricket.. so I have no idea really. He'll surely get some opportunities in this tour, if not a test debut he'll play some practice matches because Sanga and Mahela have to go through there miserable IPL season during the first practice match. This will be a great opportunity for him, and of course for Chandimal. Chandimal-Thirimanne combination is the closest to continue as our leading batting partnership tradition.. just like Dulip-Roy, Arjuna-Aravinda, Sanath-Marvan and Mahela-Sanga. Let's hope the current duo to have a good smooth battle change with Thirimanne and Chandimal. Otherwise we going to disqualify from the world run for some period just like Windies.. :haha:
Cricketics Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I don't think Matthews is a hyped or over hyped player. He has performed, and performed consistently to earn that reputation. Now it's about living up to over expecations which sri lankan people must be having from him in test side. I hope he performs though, I don't see Jayawardene playing for too long for Lanka. He might call quits soon or may be in a year or two perhaps. Lanka needs some serious players. They just lost one in Murali. I hope Matthews is a big success for lanka. So far, he has looked "The Deal" in odi's for lanka.

CoverDrive Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 Sanga and Mahela - the Class Act I love watching these two dismantle the opposition with grace and elegance rarely seen in these times. Sanga's cover drives and Mahela's late cuts are stuff of poetry. People talk that Indian Legends leaving will leave a big gap in the Indian Test line-up. I feel SL have a much bigger gulf in class between these two and anyone else. I fail to see who will fill up thier shoes in the test side. They may get by with some unconventional hitters in the Limited over formats but I really don't see the class around. It is a pity they have played so less in SA, Eng and Aus. It is unfair to call them home track bullies (especially Sanga who has done well in AU) when SL gets such a little opportunity to show thier form in tough conditions. you can only play where you given a chance. After 2005 (their peak periods) SL have played 2 tests in Eng and 2 tests in Aus and they haven't played in SA since 2002-03 (since 2005 Eng-Au have played each other 20 times) . And these countries talk of spreading cricket to other nations. for this reason alone I am looking forward to the SL tour of Eng and want to see them well. looking forward to some good batting.
