1983-2011 Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 MELBOURNE: Australian cricketers may be participating in the IPL but Indian players would not get the BCCI's permission to compete in the Twenty20 Big Bash League Down Under later this year because of domestic tournaments. BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty said the Board would not free the players of their domestic season commitments which run from October to March. The Big Bash is scheduled from mid-December until late January. "Last year some teams wanted Indian players and they were not available because of (the) domestic tournament," he told 'The Age'. India have a one-day series in Australia lined up next year soon after the Big Bash but even newly-appointed coach Duncan Fletcher can't ask for a earlier-than-scheduled trip Down Under for his players to get acclimatised. "It's a policy decision of the board, the new coach has nothing to do with that, and when there is a domestic tournament on I don't think we will release any players. "Sri Lanka now has some league in the month of July and it doesn't clash with our domestic tournament so whoever wants to go with prior permission can participate," Shetty explained. The BCCI won't send a team to Australia then. CA will get screwed. They are desperate to play India and signed a deal to play India every year in 2007. Here is an example of India's power. In 2007, the ECB signed a rights deal with the broadcaster in the region of £40 million. A large slice, 45 per cent, is linked directly to the tour by India, a cheque which will arrive at a time when the county game needs a financial boost. When sponsorship and ticketing sales from the four Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 match are added, the visit by India will make 2011 the most lucrative in the history of English cricket. The money underlines the power of Indian cricket and the reason why boards are keen to play as many matches as possible against the recently crowned world champions and the No1-ranked Test side. Playing in Australia will help Indian players get used to playing on fast and bouncy tracks against their pace bowlers. Australia has been a country where India has traditionally not done well. We have never won a single test series there and India is playing a test series there very soon and the next World Cup will also be held there. Seems like Indian players have more to lose than them, not to mention the extra money that will come with playing in the league. I get the feeling BCCI is just trying to put a leash on their players from playing for others. They also do this when someone is interested in playing country cricket when everyone knows a country stint will only help players improve their technique and skill levels if nothing else.

I agree with the point about county cricket. Players should be encouraged to play, especially the 4 day competition. The India 'A' team has toured Australia and England over the recent past. The younger players these days have a lot more exposure to different conditions. That is the way forward. Not playing in a T20 league.

Over the next 6 months alone, we play 4 tests, 5 ODIs, 1 t20 in England and then a useless 7 match ODI series in India!! On the BCCI decision, I am glad they are saying domestic cricket takes precednece over such leagues. How I wish they applied the same logic for IPL too and cut it short to not more than a 4 week long league besides completely doing away with the Champions League thereby giving additional 7-8 weeks for our domestic matces to be scheduled properly. Right now due to a 8 week long IPL and 3 week long CL cutting away into our domestic season, the Ranji matches are scheudled non-stop with at most a 3 day gap between two matches and teams play 7-8 matches in a 50-55 day period.

What are they going to learn by playing this year's Ranji trophy that they havent learnt before ? For guys like Gambhir, Kohli, Raina, Yusuf Pathan who havent played before in Australia if my memory serves me right, it will be a good experience if they do get picked.

Each of them has been on A tours to Australia on more than one occassion and Gambhir was the top scorer in the CB series of 2008. Yes the experience would be good for some of these guys but to question what will they learn by playing in ranji trophy is quite an absurd one. At best this big bash will help someone like Yusuf Pathan who isn't in contention for a test spot. The others should much rather be playing 4 day cricket than in the t20 leagues. For getting the exprience of alien conditions to the youngsters, let there be an A tour than a 3 week slam bang league.

I can understand if you are under contract like the national team members are and they need to honor that. What contract are domestic players under? Is it because of the new increase in domestic player salary that they ended up signing some shyte saying they also need a NOC?
