The thing is this kind of think was warranted a generation back when the Indian mentality was primarily survival oriented. What is disconcerting is that even with the status of lot of middle class Indians improving and there being greater oportunities and dimensions to explore in terms of studies we are still persisting with the assembly line approach. I too went thru that tunnel and it has added nothing literally. I think the process of subservience is inbuilt in our culture and education is no different. You can literally with very little application of mind and creativity get a label. Sadly, the label sells and the institutes and universities keep supplying it.

The Outsider Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 ^ A huge reason is the manner in which the Indian educational system is designed - there are no options to switch majors while you are in school (without foregoing one year), there is hardly any flexibility in the curriculum, there is no option for a double major - forget a disparate double major etc.

Ram Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Please lets not resort to the classic knee-jerk reaction and slam the educational institution. Nobody exactly knows what exactly contributed to the this action, unless of course the student leaves an elaborate suicide note or something. There could have been so many other factors.. Academic pressure may have been the tipping point I agree, but there’s no one single instance you can pinpoint to and say ‘this is what caused the suicide..’ Of course, this doesn’t take anything away from the fact that our educational system is completely effed. I think I can speak from personal experience and say that I had to endure an unbelievable amount of stress and peer pressure during my high school days, especially since I studied in one those so called ‘elite schools..’ The jostling for marks and top ranks within the class had to be seen to be believed. You werent judged by how good your percentage was, but by how many centums you scored. And you were labelled an utter failures, unelss a) you got centums in MPC (Math + Physics + Chem) b) Got a state rank or c) Got into IIT or Bits Pilani. It got to a point where it completely ruined my schooling experience and I began dreading the prospect of even going to school.
triam Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 ^^ oops, just realized I made it sound like I was in IIT M, I was not (I studied in the IIT school, Vanavani). I did get into IIT but barely and didnt go there for studies. Most of my close friends studied in IIT and I lived next to IIT M. Thats all my involvement with IIT was.
