Khalpat Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 The only thing that will have a say in how long MSD stays as a captain is injuries. Nothing else fazes this guy. He will finish as the greatest captain ever but the self loathing Indian media and public will never summon enough courage to accord him that status. GG is not the right choice to suceed MSD as he is too intense and wound up. I don't even think he is a good strategist. On the contrary I think GG has all the qualities of good captain. He is tough guy, I have seen many of his innings and I get the feeling that he has that NEVER SAY DIE attitude which is needed the most in a captain. I think he has the guts to stand for his players. I am sorry but being BCCI so powerful we never have been able to test Dhoni in what he would do if something like Murli chucking in Aussie or six Indian players getting punished in SAF kind of scenario happens instead we have seen how he responded to Graeme Smith when talking about Srisanth but I am sure Gambhir will stand for his players, team and country.
jairamesh Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Gambhir is currently the right choice, I was impressed with him in the home series against NZ, though NZ were not in the best of shape, Gambhir won convincingly and was always ruthless with a second string Indian team.

Things might be looking good for majority of the time but a lot of factors like fatigue, form, staleness of ideas, changing team dynamics contribute to the captain losing his edge after a certain time. I won't even bet on Dhoni captaining India in the next world cup.[/quote'] Excellent point really!!! :two_thumbs_up: Initially I also thought that If they are comparable age then why is Gambhir being considered. But you rightly say that Captaincy can take a lot out of you and in the long run can affect your performance particularly when you have to contribute in a big way to the team performance. someone like Ponting has stayed on for too long and it really affected him especially when he had to carry the burden of a team losing its greats. Gambhir can take over the ODI captaincy as MSD will have bigger challenges to stabilise our Test team which will be in transition (Our ODI squad is pretty much stable for the next 3-4 years). I want to see Dhoni evolve as a test cricketer - he already is a top name in Limited overs format. Virat Kohli has some time to go - his first goal has to be to get into the Test team and stabilise his position. I see a lot of Ponting in Kohli - his abrasiveness in initial years where both were destined very early to lead their country. The hunger to accumulate runs and keep doing better.

Ultimate_Game Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Why is everyone so sure that Kohli will be our future captain? Someone else could become the captain. Coz Kohli looks comfortable as a leader and generally thrives in tough situation & challenges. He won the U 19 world cup as a captain, is the deputy for BRC this year and most probably will take over from Vettori in the near future and has all the qualities a captain should have. The only thing he may need to work on is controlling his temper & aggression and he will be a pretty good captain for India after Dhoni & Gauti in the future.
