Hence if they beat the No. 1 then by the end of summer by their simple ranking system: Ashes WIN: Tick Beat No. 1 Team WIN: Tick England=No. 1 since Eng>Ashes and India. For their ex-players and media, England cricket team results outside England (except for in Australia sometimes) don't count in their ranking system!, Even if they beat India in ODIs in England, they will consider themselves No. 1 team too.

Modern selection rarely turns on one eye-catching performance and Geoff Miller and his panel – Andy Flower, James Whitaker and Ashley Giles (the only one not present to see Morgan’s knock at Derby) – are not easily for turning. Before that, Bopara had done everything by the book this season in getting runs and wickets for Essex, while Morgan had flitted about in the Indian Premier League, benefiting little other than his bank balance. As the Lions openers took guard on Thursday, the No 6 issue did not appear even to be a contest, but Morgan had changed the opinions that mattered by the close of play. “The innings tilted the balance but he was never completely out of it,†Miller said. “It was a special knock against an international side and it showed the strength of his character, given he’d not played any four-day cricket at that stage. Just the way he went about building that innings was a very big sway.†Morgan is unrepentant about playing in the IPL, even saying on Thursday that he would return if he was not picked for the Test. As the England and Wales Cricket Board had granted him permission to play there, that his participation did not count against him is correct. Yet announcing that he would return to India, when an injury might have struck a Test player, treads a risky line between pragmatism and petulance. Miller wants that cleared up. “I will be having a chat to him about his priorities,†said Miller. “I’m happy about his commitment but I need to verify that and make him aware of where we’re coming from. We’ve given players a window to go to IPL but I would personally prefer it if players were showing their consistency and commitment to England.†Morgan’s selection suggests that Bopara’s ability to bowl was scarcely considered relevant, which is perhaps understandable after England beat Australia with four front-line bowlers in far hotter conditions than are likely to prevail in Cardiff or Southampton, the ECB’s newest and most southerly Test venue. But having an outlet for 10-12 overs a day might help keep the main bowlers fresher for longer (Stuart Broad and Tim Bresnan have been injured recently while James Anderson was dropped for being spent in the World Cup). At the moment that safety valve falls to Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott, though Trott’s back is said to give him pain every time he bowls, so he may not be an option for much longer. Picking Morgan also upheld what Miller called the “consistency and continuity of selection,†from which Steve Finn has also benefited despite not showing form for Middlesex or the Lions. According to Miller, Finn had his place taken by Chris Tremlett in Australia, though that is not strictly true given they both played in the third Test at Perth, after which Finn was dropped for Tim Bresnan. Finn has been working on improving his approach with David Saker, England’s bowling coach and Richard Johnson, who fills that role at Middlesex, and gets his chance again now that Bresnan has a calf strain. Finn has worked on accelerating into the crease to lose the slight hiccup in his delivery stride, which disrupted his momentum in the transition between his run-up and the moment of release. Miller’s selection rationale appears to be based on whether a player has done enough to supplant whoever is directly ahead of him in the pecking order. On that basis, Jade Dernbach, who took nine wickets for the Lions, has not yet usurped Finn, who in turn has not impressed sufficiently to oust Tremlett. If that logic holds, and fitness permits, Tremlett will play in Cardiff on Thursday alongside James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann. Morgan’s late influence on selection suggested that the Lions game was akin to the old-fashioned Test trial, except that once the Test squad was announced the performances went to pot. Having been well on top for the first two days to the point of making Sri Lanka follow on 227 runs behind, the Lions lost by 38 runs after they were bowled out for 183 in their *second innings.

Even then trash media will keep on saying that BCCI organises more tests now, just because team has gained number one position in test ranking and ignorant fans will keep falling for it. Hope we don't care for rankings and pay attention to our game only. I still don't think we have a team which will go on whitewasing lower ranked teams and anything less than a whitewash will make us lose points. Just hope that our players don't get jaded before the England tour.

The reality is that India have hardly played WI in Test cricket since they became a minnow in the late 90s to early 2000s, so its laughable to say we are playing easy series for rankings points against them (which of course is contrary to the truth anyway, as you hardly gain anything against such low ranked teams).

For example if england whitewashed SL and India this summer I would say thats a pretty big claim to being the number 1 test side. And before you all jump on me im not saying a whitewash will happen at all. Yer an example is all 'tis. If it bcame true I will even admit that stuart broad is a man. Wait till we **** up yer lad's make up this summer and make the mascara run down his girly face.
