Will ipl cause burnout and end careers quickly?

Our team plays cricket more than any other team in the world and this ipl is sucking lot of energy outta them. u gotta play 15 or 16 ipl games without much rest. Are we gonna see shortened careers? How long will dhoni play this game?

They are going to miss WI series. So effectively Number of days in IPL = Number of days in WI. This is how they are tackling injuries. Batsmen can have long careers regardless of the schedule. But bowlers will have short careers.

It may shorten some careers at Intl level, but more importantly it may affect the quality of Test players in future. Maybe the next gen may think swinging wildly is textbook cricket.

Apart from the unquantifiable intensity, Quantitatively, 1 ODI = 2.5 T20 games 1 Test = 11.25 T20 games Even if we account for increased intensity for a short amount of time in a T20, 14~17 T20's are still less than a 3 test series. In IPL, i reckon that it is not the amount of time spent on the field that is energy sapping but the traveling. Burnout will happen to main players but that will be due to increased number of games in all formats, not just the IPL. Dhoni, and every player who is in all the 3 squads, have to start managing the amount of time they put in the field and off it training. They need to know the limits of their bodies and miss a tour here and there if they can.

It also will start the ethical question for Indian players... IPL is an Indian domestic tournament. How right is it for our senior players to skip an international commitment for IPL? Because as much as we pretend as it is otherwise, the selectors have given a break to Dhoni and the likes because they have played too much cricket and IPL is eating into the already short resting period. Does playing in the IPL for money be more preferable to an international assignment? Posters say that IPL takes a toll and the solution would be to miss a tour. But wouldn't missing a tour be redundant if the players skip the IPL. Other international players do it. It would sound wierd for Indian players to be missing the Indian Premier Leaague, but what would we as fans prefer-Dhoni for CSK, Sachin for MI and Zak for RCB or all of them for India? PLus, would it be right for us to expect the players to give up so much money for us to see them in Internation matches?

Much like English regulars take part in county league Indian players will take part in IPL. They used to play challenger trophy. Now they are skipping it. This is BCCI's product. As much as we like our players only to represent India, it is not going to happen until IPL exists. If i am right none of the players asked for breaks. BCCI give them break. IPL is not just a domestic tournament. We may call it domestic tournament. It is not.

Fans? Are the fans gonna feed Munaf patel after he retires? Most of the people who criticize the players here are working abroad and are basically hypocrites. We can look at the heavyweights such as Dhoni, Sachin, Yuvraj and say that they make a lot of money but what about Zaheer? Hardly makes any money from ads, makes less than a million in IPL and our annual retainment fees is also really low. He has just another couple of more years to make some money before retirement. How about Malinga? Or a lot of NZ players, WI players ?

I do realize that its not an easy question to answer. IPL does provide for a whole bunch of players. And I am by no means criticizing the players. But as a fan, I would rather see Sachin score a 50 against Australia than a 100 in the IPL. And no, I am not a foreign hypocite or a self proclaimed elitist. Just a student in India. Also, a many players do play for their countries, choosing international matches over the IPL. Although, their's I think is a different case simply because IPL is an Indian tournament. So the contradiction is greater when Indians won't play in the IPL. Irrespective of what anyone says, the question is going to asked and is a condrum that the players would face. As much as I would not want the players to miss the international matches, its their decision. A player has every right to earn for themselves but they are also more than that. You can't disagree with the fact that a Sachin or a Dhoni is not just another employee. They represent India, and I think it is justifiable for us to expect them to go out there and perform. For many of us, they are our idols. Therefore, I dont think it would be so wrong for us to expect them to play for the country.

They were given a break because they played too much cricket. And that too much cricket would also include the IPL.

IPL helps in getting the unknown players into the limelight. Not to mention expose a whole bunch of domestic players into pressure situation...plus they get to play with some of the top quality players (Indians plus Intl.). Money itself is a big factor. IMO with good money...players will have the counter balance....& will probably cut down on other burnouts factors like doing too many adds etc.

IPL also puts money into the BCCI coffers which means more money for cricket in India. Noone can deny that in the last couple of years, ranji player match fees increased, stadiums are better and more money goes to the international players from BCCI. So players like Sachin and Dhoni making IPL popular is still good of the game in India.

rajmarie, What top class Intl cricket level pressure situation does the 'pressure in IPL' :D help prepare ? (even for domestic players). The quality they can learn from India-A tour or county cricket exposure is far superior.

Symonds said a while back that we will never see anyone with a 20 year old career again. If you exclude players who lost out on years because of the war, you're left with Cowdrey, Sobers, Imran, Simpson, M Mohammad and Tendulkar. I've left out a couple of people who didn't play enough/played after a long interval (Traicos and Close). Will we see an addition to this list?

Not much chance. The amount of cricket the modern day players play will surely result in burnouts and early retirements from Tests/ODIs to concentrate on the $$IPL$$.

What pressure...how many of these domestic player ever gets to play even in front of 1000 crowd...That itself is an experience....not to mention...playing with/against players of the caliber of Sachin, Dhoni, Warne etc...players that want to..can learn a lot. Then if ever they get into Indian team....they will not feel so novice. Not to mention...A tours...how many that happenns in a yeaer...& County cricket for our domestic player....:hysterical: u think guys like Rahul Sharma, Valthaty etc will ever get that chance unless they are already Indian regulars

County cricket does not happen because of crazy ass rules by stupid BCCI. Otherwise it will be a wonderful experience for our yengsters (I guess BCCI relaxed that rule now).

& under that relaxed rule...which of our domestic players are going to County.

Thats the whole point! Neither BCCI nor the players seem to be paying attention to the quality of experience gained by yengsters. Moar of these IPL T20 and all the other parties and nautanki associated with it. Rajmarie - not much is going to be 'absorbed and learnt' by the players through this IPL tamasha. Yes, they'll make loads of money - what was that 1.6 for S.Tiwary? and some similar for Irfan Pathan? - but that's not the point we are talking abt here.
