We have successfully controlled our populatoin explosion. ratio has improved over last 10 years. Here in Gujarat, government is doing stellar job in saving Girl Child. Most clinics do not reveal sex, prohibited by the law, but there are always clinics who would just do that to make extra bucks.

Per the wiki info, ratio goes from 1.12 (birth) to 1.13 (under 15) for India. In Switzerland the ratio goes from 1.05 (birth) to 1.08 (under 15). Anyways, with the rapid growth countries like India and China are experiencing, a paper done in 1990 is almost of no relevance now. The social and economic situation is changing ever so rapidly.

The problem is fairly recent, and was exaggerated when pre natal ultra sonic gender determination techniques were introduced in India.

It is illegal in all clinics across the country to pre determine the gender. But most people who can afford it, just go to places like Bangkok or Hong Kong and get around the loopholes in the system. People don't need to go to Hong Kong etc, despite being illegal (or rather I should say, because it is illegal) it is available in almost all big cities in India, if you know where to look for it.
