ViruRulez Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 HYDERABAD: The state's craze for IIT education hit a crescendo for the second successive year when AP students bagged top honours in the IIT-JEE results. Andhra Pradesh hit a jackpot on Wednesday, bagging five of the top ten ranks in the entrance examination. In 2010, the state had bagged seven of the top 10 ranks. I Prudhvi Tej from West Godavari district scored the first rank in the examination. Other rank holders from the state include V Shaimak Reddy (3rd), B Saikiran (4th), T Bhargava Reddy (8th) and J Varun (9th). The results of the reserved categories too had students from AP sitting pretty on the first ranks. Rama Krishna Banoth was the top ranker in the ST category and J Varun was the topper in the OBC category. A jubilant Prudhvi Tej said he stuck to his study schedule, skipped the state engineering entrance and aimed only at a good rank in IIT. A film buff, Tej said he was looking forward to doing his electrical engineering from IIT-Bombay. "I was sure I would get a good rank in IIT," he said. The results created much frenzy among the coaching centres in the city, which held various events to felicitate the toppers from their institutions. Officials overseeing the examination said that AP bagged over 15 ranks in the top 100 in the general category section. The south zone, comprising all four southern states, secured 30 of the top 100 ranks. In reserved categories, AP bagged 35 ranks in top 100. IIT-JEE experts said that students from the state perform well in the examination as they grasp the basic format of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) question paper. "In the entrance test, several concepts are mixed to form a question. There are no straight forward questions in JEE and the IIT trainers from AP have understood the idea better than those in other states," said Prof T S Natarajan from IIT-Madras, who is also chairman of JEE South Zone Committee. Others attributed the rich harvest of ranks to AP's IIT focus over the last three decades. "We as a state are so clued in to IIT preparations that even the state government recently changed the Intermediate syllabus to suit the interests of JEE takers. Students feel that landing a seat in IIT is the ultimate goal," said D V Rao, vice-chairman, Narayana group of institutions. He explained that the state is the only place where IIT syllabus is taught right from Class VI. Explaining the 2011 success, JEE teachers said that this year, too, it was the Mathematics paper that helped students climb the rank ladder. AP students are traditionally good at Mathematics and score higher than their compatriots from other states. "Like last year, the mathematics paper was tough in JEE-2011. This could have worked in favour of the students from the state many of whom have scored well in the subject. The saying is if Chemistry is tough, students from other states score well and if the Math paper is tough we score better," explained an IIT expert. However, the faculty of IIT coaching institutes are still unimpressed with the state's performance. They said that more students from AP would have bagged top ranks had the JEE paper-setters avoided question paper errors. "The state could have scored at least two more ranks had there not been errors in the paper. (j/k) Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai etc. keeps coming in the national limelight quite often but AP does not normally feature. But a few days ago I saw that Hyderabad has got India's fastest home internet connections at the cheapest rates and then I saw that AP is also topping in IIT continuously every year. I never visualized AP as such a state with such brilliance and I am quite pleasantly surprised. Hats off to AP and congrats to the toppers. :hatsoff:

Hau The local Hyderabadi Urdu is very funny. Even their Urdu newspapers are in the same slang style. :D Basically Hyderabad is the same as Chennai ( maybe a little better in infra than Chennai) + tasty (but very spicy) Biriyani. PS: Hats off to AP.

I liked the part where Vineet Buch sums it up nicely (point to be noted - he does not boast about his JEE#1 as his best achievement): “I thought being No 1 in JEE was tough,†says Buch. “But overcoming this disease has been something else. The JEE effort definitely helped with this—I knew the levels of determination I was capable of and refused to give up.â€

But I just cant help thinking about how many of these boys had their childhoods absolutely snatched from them. I know that some these guys start their prep for the JEE as early as their 10th standard, sometimes even before that. I’ve personally seen some these guys put themsevles thru military style rigor (IIT tuitions at 4 am in the morning, then again till 10 in the night etc..) Of course, the oft bandied about generalization that IIT guys are not good anything but math and science and have poor social skills is just baloney. But the fact that every year, 10s of 1000s of young boys put themselves through the sheer grind and torture of such a ridiculously rigorous learning regime, just to get into the IITs.. that is sad. Boys need to be boys.. everything else is secondary.

I know many golts who are certainly not genius but are doing pretty good in life. Yes but many of them at one point or other tried to give IIT-JEE a chance. I was smart enough to know my capabilities, when my dad asked me once if I would like to give the entrance exam a shot, I chucked and said "please". :P

You seem to be commenting on something which you have absolutely no clue about. You should go and see any of the cultural festivals which are organized by these IIT boys, be it IIT-D's Rendezvous or IIT-B's MI. College students from other colleges come asking for entrance passes so that they can be part of the fun that these IIT boys have. Of-course, if they are not good at any thing other than science and math, how come these boys are able to organize fests of these scales? I am not even talking about professional careers which typically IITian after completing their graduations. Yes, many of them come to IIT after putting really hard work, but so is true for any prestigious college in India. Do you think people getting into any of top medical college puts any lesser effort. You have to have this trade-off, if you want to achieve something of quality in life. It's funny to hear that boys don't remain boys if they prepare for IIT.

My point is, if boys are ready to put in some extra effort to achieve something of quality in life, why they should be discouraged? It's hard work of an year or two and it doesn't make them impaired of any thing in long term.
