akshayxyz Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 Well I've never applied to Sloan' date=' but MIT has done that - I still might be able to dig up the email, let me know if you want to see it because [b']that's pretty much the closest you'll ever get. Yes please, but do not forget to gold-plate it. I have nothing against you - you have every reason to be proud of your stuff and so has every one else. But, the kind of attitude you show towards complete strangers , which you know hardly anything about (esp. who differ from your opinion even by an iota) - that shows, with all your intellect/achievements you still have some mediocre part of yours inside you that keeps trying to show up. If any part of your head is grounded then perhaps that is one thing you can learn, if you feel such need. w/o that too you will do well, and so will others.
punjabi_khota Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 It is a useless discussion. The main point of contention is the definition of "quant job". Doing some 'quant' as part of your job is way different than having a 'quant job' as is defined on wall-street. Also, if you are doing MBA as a preparation for a quant job, there is probably not a bigger fool than you. You could very well be doing an M.D. to start up a company that sells sanitary napkins.
Dayman Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 I have never been to AP but always thought of it as a crap Southie state with hardly much development compared to the Northie states. :D (j/k) Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai etc. keeps coming in the national limelight quite often but AP does not normally feature. But a few days ago I saw that Hyderabad has got India's fastest home internet connections at the cheapest rates and then I saw that AP is also topping in IIT continuously every year. I never visualized AP as such a state with such brilliance and I am quite pleasantly surprised. Hats off to AP and congrats to the toppers. :hatsoff: :two_thumbs_up: AP FTW In my experience of telugus (couple of flat mates(one with jee rank 60) and many colleagues), I wouldn't call any of them very very good. They are mostly hard working n would often work extra at the expense of their work-life balance. Tamils are smarter (are manipulative n have v. good managerial skills) on average imo. Eh, that's a pretty big generalization to make based on rooming with a couple telugus and a few colleagues. And if anything, the article proves that it's the opposite.

Don't disagree with your post, particularly highlighted part. But at the same time I would say doing an MBA, does not preclude you from doing a Quant job as well. Just to summarize, I know profile of one prof, who did his PhD in Operations Research (OR) at Stanford , Taught Advanced OR at IIT Delhi and last I heard, nowdays he teaches some quant finance at ISB Hyderabad to wannbe MBA's. This clarifies few things I guess.
vaibhav_delhi Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 "Tamils are smarter (are manipulative n have v. good managerial skills) on average imo." That's generalizing. if you say so. But thats true in my experience(pretty decent sample size)....if you calibrate 1000 telugus and 1000 tamils for smartness (i.e. in terms of being manipulative, having good managerial skills etc), you will find the average rating of tamils comfortably higher than that of telugus.....

Was there any study done on this, or are you just presenting your gut feeling as scientific facts?

vaibhav_delhi Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 why can't we show love n respect to all posters? why can't we merely agree to disagree without feeling the need to ridicule fellow posters in every other topic?
ganeshran Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 why can't we show love n respect to all posters? why can't we merely agree to disagree without feeling the need to ridicule fellow posters in every other topic? You complain about being ridiculed but have no qualms about branding people belonging to a whole region as manipulative and another as dumb. Without any scientific stats or basis, you are trying to pass off what is an opinion (Telugu people are not that smart) as a fact. Your sample size of personal involvement with 2-3 guys is way too low to make a judgement on the intelligence of people belonging to states with more than 6-10 crore population.

I clearly wrote tamils are smarter on average. I have worked with n known plenty of telugus\kannadas n tamils (perhaps a hundred of them while working for Microsoft during the 4 yrs that I spent there) I also believe eastern Europeans are better in maths than the indians on average (I associate that with cultural reasons) . This doesn't imply that I believe indians are dumb in maths nor have I done any comparative study on one thousand eastern europeans n indians....
chanakya Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Meh finance quant is boring... on the small levels Even marketing has quant and pretty heavy stuff :D Seriously, try going through some papers :D during my MBA there were a few CFA's CA's in my class Not to mention a few IITians as well. And we got royally screwed by the professors Quant jobs - nothing gets better than Algorithimic trading - you need to be CS grad minimum, an MBA in finance also helps :)
Mariyam Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 why can't we show love n respect to all posters? why can't we merely agree to disagree without feeling the need to ridicule fellow posters in every other topic? Touché Vaibhav, Touché.

All these comparisons are odious. Even if what you is is true, it can be easily attributed to the fact that it snows for 11 months out of 12 in Russia and most parts of Eastern Europe. They don't have much to do, but sit at home, drink vodka, play chess and read books by mathematicians. Obviously they would be better. You can't view it out of the cultural context. Its something that geography/culture forces on them and its not something to be proud of. That is like me making statement" though I have not done a comparative study, I believe Indians are better at hanging off local trains than people from Zaire". You get the drift. :icflove:

Telegus are not that smart, they work hard at the expense of their work life balance Tamils are manipulative on average. No matter how many tamils and telgus you have interacted with, your sample size is too low to arrive at a conclusion. I am not saying that one cannot have an opinion. But unless you have evidence to back up these comments, dont try to pass off opinions as solid facts by making statements like "If you calibrate 1000 tamils and 1000 telugus, you will come to this conclusion".
Mariyam Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Being manipulative is considered a sign of smartness these days???
