Jersey #10 Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 and yeah btw, I don't know how tall you are but a road bike requires one to be at least 5'8". If you are not that tall then go for a mountain bike
punjabi_khota Posted May 30, 2011 Author Posted May 30, 2011 I don't want a road bike, I am shooting for a hybrid. I want upright riding position, and I am not planning to rock it on the rocky trails too much. No suspensions, skinny-ish tires.
punjabi_khota Posted May 30, 2011 Author Posted May 30, 2011 PK' date=' if you've got some time then shop around for craigslist for some time and try out a few over the weekends. You should be able to get a well cared for Schwinn, Cannondale, Specialized etc. which was $1000-$1500 or so 3-5 years back for $300-500. And most of the time you can be assured that it will be in really good condition because someone who spent that amount on a bike would have taken care of it.[/quote'] So, according to you, would a $1500 bike be noticeably much different for a newbie like me, from a $500 bike? I am not thinking of putting on spandex anytime soon (ever), nor am thinking 50 mile trips, nor am I thinking 50 mile trips. A problem with getting a used bike is that since I don't know much about this stuff, I have no idea how to haggle or get the right price. I looked at a $800 bike yesterday, and I couldn't for the life of me tell the difference between that and the $400 one.
zen Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Check out Public, if you are looking for something nice and a little exclusive (I hope it is)

I looked at a $800 bike yesterday, and I couldn't for the life of me tell the difference between that and the $400 one. I was under the impression you were looking for a road bike - didn't even have an idea that Hybrids go up to the $1500 price tag - the non customized ones. Speaking from a road bike perspective, I would say a used well maintained $1500 bike is better than a new $500 one. Have little idea about Hybrids. But talking from the road bike comparison, a 3-4 year old $1000-1500 bike would have a slightly better frame than a new $300-500 one. Where you will be spending the maximum money in maintaining the bike is the gears - quality Shimano gears which you will get on a $1500 bike will last you 10 years without any extra maintenance besides regular oiling. The $300-500 bikes will have an inferior gear system which you might need to get replaced/repaired in 2-3 years and that itself might set you back by $200 or so. To price a bike, look for the gear and brake system they are using - note down those specs and google it to check whether you are getting a fair deal. For the frame, you should be able to find hazaar reviews on the net.
zen Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 1500$ for a bike. 2000$ for a tata nano. :WTF: If I m not wrong, bikes from companies like cervelo start from around $3000 :P Cervelo
