Sri Lankan Cricket in terrible condition after 3 yrs.

Recommended Posts

Come on, they are going through a transition period. They have some nice youngsters coming through the ranks: koushal perera, thirimanne, chandimal, but their pace attack apart from malinga looks as poor as that of India and BD
LoL..What's wrong with the current pace attack of India? Don't compare it to BD.

You cannot call our presenT pace attack a pace attack. The 3 better pace bowlers at present in BD are mashrafe, nazmul and shafiul but all of them are injured We had a decent pace attack under coaches like champaka ramanayake and Ian pont. Since that noob shane jurgensen took over our pace attack being the worst in cricket history. Rubel who was a very promising limited over bowler 2 years ago kept on losing matches after matches, dont wanna comment about shahadat hossain rajib. I think even sreesanth can bowl better than him. Need to be patient for our bowlers to get fit.

Transition? This thread was created when Murali was still in the team. Sanga and Jaya are still there. Kula is pretty experienced as well. Fact is they can't win without Murali.

Even with murali they never won in tests that much. It was with Jayasuriya when they were decent in tests and powerful in LOI's.

This series is not a big indication about SL cricket standards. I'm pretty sure that Bangladesh will challenge other big teams more regulatory now. Their batting has improved a lot although the bowling is still poor. You never know both teams may do well in the champions trophy  Actually after a long drought I see a pool of talented players are coming with a good school cricket background for us. Also in recent times almost all SL fast bowlers have been coming from out side the system (Malinga, Kula, Eranga, Pradeep, the list goes on), big schools producing none. But in the current school season the trend seems to have changed. Some promising fast bowlers are opening the bowling in most of the school big matches. When we beat India in 1985 it was a trio of fast bowlers who done the damage. Ashantha De Mel, Rumesh Ratnayake and Saliya Ahangama). Those days all of them came from good school cricket. So this is a good trend. Waking up the neighbours

The wickets were conducive to seam bowling and Sri Lanka's attack was marshalled ably by Ashantha de Mel, who along with the young pair of Ratnayake and Saliya Ahangama consistently got prodigious swing and put doubts in the minds of the Indian batsmen. While Sri Lanka's fast bowlers managed to take 19 of the 20 Indian wickets in the second Test, their Indian counterparts only managed eight. Kapil took one wicket in the match.
Full Amazing. We should go that path again, at least against the Asian teams. I think SL batsmen are less talented against spin compared to other Asian teams but can express themselves more against fast bowlers if they regularly play them.

lol at the attempt to make sl look better since BD beat them, and to include BD in the same breath as Ind. seriously, we should expect an absolute destruction of BD by sl in the next few games..

are you on weed, sresanth with his seam position loony character or not is a good fast bowler.. and with his one ball against kallis in the last ind-sa tour bowled more than all the bd pace bowlers ever bowled in the history of bd cricket. nmUqv83JyCI

Kallis was in the air for quiet a few seconds. And Shree isn't that bad of a bowler to be compared to BD lol. He is a gun to have in helpful conditions.

My point was changing the whole system in the country. It has to be started by moving 1st class cricket out of Colombo and play in more pace-friendly central part of Sri Lanka (pitches still have to improve). Just preparing seaming tracks for international matches only while keep playing domestic cricket on slow-low tracks is a stupid thing. SL batsmen's natural stroke play more suited against fast bowling than spin. It proved time and again in limited overs cricket. They have the shots to score in those pace-friendly conditions. To do it in test you need proper practice and preparations. Specially you have to master the art of leaving the ball. Also SL is the only country among all the test playing nations that didn't have a consistent 4-day 1st class tournament. More common club tournament is a 3-day version. This is a another factor for our batsmen to fail in test. Here are the records of the top order (1-3) batmen from IND, SL and PAK against AUS, SA, ENG and NZ in those 4 countries; First, ordered by average; statsespncricinfocomcie.png Look at Kaluwitharane's record for example, averaging 30 at a SR of 82. That's a pretty decent record for a WK batsman. But his overall ODI average is a mediocre 22. Now, ordered by strike rate; statsespncricinfocomcie.pngOrdered by no. of hundreds; statsespncricinfocomcie.png The striking stat here is the rate of producing those hundreds by Jayasuriya. 1 per every 9 matches. Better than all the other batsmen except Mahela (1 per every 8 matches). We all know the style he scored those hundreds :hatsoff: Sachin's rate here is pretty disappointing  Another thing that these stats show is if Mahela was a top order (1-3) batsman throughout his career he could have been an ATG ODI batsman  Pakistan batsmen maybe struggling here but as a cover up they had fast bowlers both India and Sri Lanka could only dream of.
