Indian XI for T20/ODI against the Windies

Just looking at the squad for over LoI leg of the Windies tour and it looks like this; Limited-overs squad: Suresh Raina (capt), R Ashwin, S Badrinath, Harbhajan Singh (vc), Virat Kohli, Praveen Kumar, Amit Mishra, Munaf Patel, Parthiv Patel (wk), Yusuf Pathan, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Vinay Kumar, Manoj Tiwary, Shikhar Dhawan. Wonder what the line-up is going to be... My provisional XI; Parthiv Dhawan(?) Kohli Rohit Raina/Badri (or) Tiwary Badri (or) Tiwary) /Raina Yusuf Bhajji Praveen Aswhin Munaf A few points of contentions; Where are the openers in the squad? They seemed to have picked only one specialist opener in the entire squad, which pretty much guarantees the selection of Dhawan in the XI (and that’s weird because I didn’t even think this guy was in contention for a national spot recently and it was not like he set the whole IPL on fire). . That leaves us with Parthiv as the other opener, which means Saha probably misses out. Kohli slots in his usual position of 3, while its probably going to be Rohit at 4. There’s probably going to be a tussle b/w Tiwary and Badri for the last remaining middle order slot, but I expect Badri to take that place. Ashwin pips Mishra for the 2nd spinner slot while the slower pitches in Windies means that Munaf and Kumar occupy the 2 seamers slots and Ishant misses out.

Just get the feeling that the batting is slightly under-powered for ODIs/T20s. Apart from Yusuf and maybe Raina, there are no real power-hitters in the team. Dhawan is more a touch player than a hitter, Parthiv can hardly lift the bat. Badri is more like a test middle order bat who took the wrong train and came to the ODIs and Kohli relies more on timing and placement than on power. Rohit is probably somewhere in between. With both Dhoni and UV missing out, the batting is suffering from a deficit of brute force. We may struggle to score if the pitches are slightly on the slower side, which has been the case in the Windies recently.

3-1 combination against WI would be stupid. They can't play spin to save their lives. I'm sure we will have 2 spinners plus Pathan/Raina/Sharma as part-time options.

Yes looking at WI batsmen's incapabilities against spin bowling,they should go with 2-2 combo,but I have a feeling they will not.

Kohli isn’t a power-hitter, I think everyone knows that by now. Parthiv needs the ball to come on the bat with bounce to be productive in his most favorite area – behind point on the off-side. If they bowl around the wicket cramping him for room, he could potentially struggle to score runs.

The bigger issue going forward is Bhajji's spot in the ODI team. Ashwin has been excellent in his ODI appearances and with his ability to bowl in the powerplay overs, he is a real asset to the team.

Bowling is in some ways more interesting than the batting side of things, chance for others to step out from the rather uninspiring shadow of Bhajan for at least one or two ODIs - or more specifically for Ashwin and Mishraji to get that chance. I hope so anyway.. I think Rohit is probably next in line to open after Dhawan and PaPa, he will be batting up the order anyways which should be a good thing.

Our opening batsmen will be a problem,anything they score will be a bonus,no expectations from them.Everything depends on the middle order,they will have to score big runs.

Badri and Tiwary are inexperienced at this level and the pressure of international cricket (even against an ordinary WI team) is completely different to domestic stuff. As for Rohit, we're all waiting for him to finally deliver on his vast talent but he's disappointed too many times to expect anything.

Our batsmen will score big, Superman has been in the runs and they picked the right Tiwary. PaPa was decent in South Africa aswell. Dhawan is iffy but at least it's not M Vijay (avg. 17) Kohli is Mr Consistent plus he and Badri have a Test spot to push for as well

I'm just glad that they are showing it on youtube, i will get to see these fringe players show their talent, indian bowling line up will be interesting. if they are playing 3-1 combo then ashwin should get the nod ahead of bhajji.

So he needs rest till then.

Would have been nice if Mukund was in the squad, as has been pointed out another opener is needed. Would have given him exposure to International cricket and playing in Wi prior to his test debut. In their infinite wisdom the board has no tour match schedule so most players will have to go from T20 mode stright into test match mode. Ideally for me NO limited overs matches would have been scheduled and a tour match organised prior to the tests. Also the Eng series would have been a 3 match series and there would have been no pointless ODI tour of India by Eng... some ways the schedule could have been less hectic.
