Who has been the best Prime Minister of India in your opinion? Jawaharlal Nehru Lal Bahadur Shastri Indira Gandhi Morarji Desai Rajiv Gandhi P. V. Narasimha Rao Atal Bihari Vajpayee Dr. Manmohan Singh I haven't included Gulzarilal Nanda because he only served as a caretaker for very short period while Charan Singh, V. P. Singh, Chandra Shekhar Singh, H. D. Deve Gowda and Inder Kumar Gujral were Prime Ministers for less than 12 months.

Indira Gandhi, Reason being her decision to interfere in genocide of Bangladeshis in 1971 war, in-spite of opposition from US and UN..Most courageous PM India has ever seen.... Need more leaders liker her who are not cowards...

HD Deve Gowda, I K Gujral etc. etc. kahan gaye :hmmm: It is difficult to say best as none of them were that great. Shastri and Indira were bold PMs whereas Vajpayee and MMS were/are the most polite/mass friendly ones. But none of them were exceptional. Till the Indira era, India was not that corrupt and so the PMs until Indira can be credited for that. But then India was not that big of an economy at that time and those periods also saw the worst period of Indian economy. Due to that period our national per capita income became almost pathetic. Other countries like Malaysia and China who were almost equal in per capita income in the 50s have grown their per capital by manifold and are almost 2-4 times our per capita. So, though quite non-corrupt yet that period of somewhat socialism was terrible for our economy too. Every PM had its own advantages and disadvantages.

And as we have it today both Pakistan and Bangladesh hate us.

We have never had a great PM in my opinion. But then in the last 50 years there aren't too many countries which can really boast of a great leader. I would vote for none of these guys.

For me it has to be close btw Nehru and Vajapayeeji. As a person I am not great fan of Nehru, but he had a vision for country and which he implemented as well. The planned way in which he set up heavy industries, institutes of national importance, highways during first few years of independence is amazing. It always gives me a feeling that India had started in right direction after getting independence. We lost our way somewhere btw 1965-1990. Vajpayee was the next PM who had some kind of vision for the country and had wide acceptance with masses. Some of the schemes like Golden Quadrangle, Pradhan Mantri Sarak Yojna to connect remote villages with roads were long due but no one thought of these other than Vajpayee. He did most among all PM's to normalize relations with Pakistan without conceding any ground. I have voted for Jawahar Lal Nehru (though I did not want to :-( )

Indira Gandhi initial part of his PM career, she was good, really good. Later Power got to her. Its because of her, we have so many regional parties in every state of India. She used to dismiss state government whenever she wished. We had our first emergency because of her. She was good initially though. After that, ABV for caring out nuclear tests and making India nuclear power, I know it all started long back. But he was the one who took the chance and did it.

Atal Bihari for me, I feel as its mentioned in one of the thread of cricket forums also we always had the inferiority complex, As an Indian we could never dream that we can be numbe rone in any thing. That was first time during Vajpayee rule that things started to turn, US and west started to recognize us as a power. For first time the word India Pakistan was not taken in a sentence but India China word came into existence, our relation with US improved. Infact its said that Vajpayee and Musharaf were vey close to solution of Kashmir. Vajpayee was also seen as non corrupt and non puppet PM, which was not heard before either Indian PM have been corrupt or puppet. Indian Railways started to gain profit, there was a boom in media, IT etc.

I can only talk of my lifetime. And the answer is Dr.Manmohan Singh. It takes guts and intelligence to tackle India in its current growth phase, to take action against an alliance partner, to consolidate India's position as a Global Superpower and yet tackle the daily allegations that he has to.

PVNR is under-rated One must credit him and Manmohan Singh for initiating economic liberalization. Today's opportunities would not exist but for that vision.
