If my memory serves me right, customs duty was paid by Fiat India, after uproar from civil groups , govt was forced to retract the waiver. And I dont believe this was gifted by Ferrari without any business motive. I guess this was his compensation instead of cash for being brand ambassador for Fiat India...May be they played the gift episode, just to avoid tax...If that's the case, I dont think it is unethical for Sachin to sell his car.

So a gift cannot be sold unless it is redone as a non-gift? :dontknow:
It can be sold under normal circumstances, but under normal circumstances you would pay import duty on an item even if it's a gift. In this particular case the exemption was granted because the item was a gift, so how is fair to taxpayers that someone sells it off for profit?

Well how was it fair in the 1st place? All he has done now is converted that item to it's cash value.

Yeah, it wasn't 'fair' in the first place, but I am assuming the government has certain discretionary powers here which they used to exempt the duty because it was a gift given to a figure of national importance for his personal use. Now, the very premise on the basis of which the exemption was granted does not exist if he is selling it for a profit.

Desai = gujju gujjus can do anything. First sachin was bought by a gujju in the IPL and now his ferrari is bought by a gujju big deal serious note - he used the ferrari for a while and probably got over it by now so sold it...BIG DEAL media is garbage

Fiat paid the tax for Tendulkar for endorsing their now defunct 'palio' brand. It was/is Sachin's car and he has every right to do whatever he wants to!

Agreed' date=' it's his car and he can do whatever he wants to with that car, but it would have been gracious of Sach to gift it to some budding cricketer![/quote'] Gift 1 Cr+ to a budding cricketer?

Nothing worse than giving a hungry youngster more than he has earned. Chances are high that it will kill his motivation and spoil his chances of being successful.
