I don't know if this is a legacy of the 90s, an era of the game I know very little about other than Rajesh Chauhan, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Tendulkar :hehe: It seems like winning, and winning comfortably is something most of my peers seem almost uncomfortable with. One of my colleagues was shocked that West Indies was 9 down so quickly. Um... doh? Who is the best team in the world again? And then there are some homos who say the entire WC was fixed by the underworld. "Dhoni didn't play anything at all, and suddenly he plays like that in the final? Don't you smell something fishy?" :WTF: I'm also reminded of some homos on here who were hoping not to face Australia in the QFs, or any of the knockouts for that matter Sure, they are not cricket fanatics like us who are so psychotic as to spend all their free time on a forum discussing the game, but as popular as cricket is with Indians, why is it still a phew! than an Mmmm-hmmm when we win? 1) 1000 years of slavery to foreigners which has dented confidence beyond belief and 2) You think the 90s were bad? Atleast we won at home. The 80s were even worse, we might have won under 10 tests in those entire 10 years. It may not even be worth talking about Indian cricket before then apart from the 70s when we were genuinely competitive. SO in 80 years of test cricket we have been reasonably good at it only for 20 years or so. You either suffer from the back-handed-compliment-syndrome OR you seriously need to change your circle/group. Whats with celebrating today's success by beating down yesteryears? I for one am yet to meet anyone, Indian or otherwise, who is wide eyed at seeing Windies were down 9 wickets so quickly. Why would they be? Any team that is led by Darren Sammy, who most likely wont find a place in any other Test team let alone lead it, is a bad team. Period! Then again I also belong to the generation who while celebrating Gavaskars, Kapils, Amarnaths etc also had a lot of respect for Bedi, Chandras, Wadekars etc. When Kapil won 1983 WC I can not remember anyone dissing Venkatraghavan for leading India badly in earlier campaigns. Maybe it is something to do with current Indian X-generation :winky:

Dude, I can assume very well that you hardly ever watched cricket in 80s. No disrespect but how old are you? Do you even have any first hand experience to chastise an entire generation of cricket, and cricketers?? India in 80s were a damn good team. And I have watched India in 80s, 90s and today so I am much better positioned to make that comment that folks who have spent entire life following Cricinfo. Yes we did not dominate world cricket but thats because of many a reasons, including the teams that played cricket. Australia were a mediocre hit and miss team before they found a bunch of tough as nails cricketers that ruled for close to 15 years. India can reign for many years to come if they mange their resources properly.

Sure I am happy to admit that I haven't watched cricket the whole of the 80s just the latter half and I don't feel ashamed about that at all so don't waste time berating me for being factual.

No matter wht the world says, our youngsters should remain aggressive .. If ppl think they r arrogant .. then hell with those ppl .. If ppl have problem then they should first achieve wht the players have achieved and then talk .. Tht 90s mentality players like manjrekar, doda ganesh, kuruvilla,amre etc etc .. they r just a bad phase in the Indian cricket history and should be wipped off .. Most of the time u will find the journalists from this era only who will say tht new team India is no gentleman .. arrogant etc etc .. Those journalists r looser too ..

It now feels weird that you dont have to really get behind the team to accomplish great victories and such....... Most importantly...............ENJOY IT WHILE WE CAN once our dominance is over......we are going to be the same people reminiscing over these glory days :(( This is exactly what I'm talking about. People are still afraid it is all a dream.

For years, (including the dark days of the 90s), I have followed India's progress in every format, every match. I get ridiculed by some morons for following Cricket so much. These same morons then suddenly have the right to celebrate via facebook statuses etc, when India beat Pakistan in the Semi, and then when they win the World Cup. Probably can't even differentiate between LBW and DRS. Sorry to vent in this thread, the title seemed relevant-ish...

Do you realize, and Google is your best friend for members of your generation, that India used to World Champion in another sports, and when we actually happen to be under a foreign rule. Or did you forget how India won 8 Hockey Olympic Golds? No other country has dominated a sport like India did. Even the US dream team got their *****es whooped after a couple of Basketball gold. Or do you in your esteemed opinion beleive only cricket is the gauze of a nation's(India) chivalry and that essentially world started after 1990? xxx

desi pride 1234 Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 credit should be given to ganguly for the aggression. i dont think any captain wud have wanted bajji in the team at that time. because he had problems with nca where he was dropped for breaking furnitures. but ganguly wanted aggressive players in the team and never gave much chances to players like venugopal roa and thiru kumaran, nayan mongia. it was speculated that he sent venu at 3 to face bowlers like shane bond and asked thiru kumaran to bowl against moyo who scored a century and got hit for a six in the in the final overs to show the indian selectors that they are making mistakes. he was the one who dropped vvs from one day side from the 2003 world cup and asked srinath to come out of retirement to play in the 2003 world cup. still you can hear players like yuvraj praising ganguly for keeping faith on him. He is the man who changed indian cricket.

I hypothesized if it had anything to do with the 90s era because I keep reading "It's the 90s all over again..." blah, blah. We were world champions in 1983. We must have been doing something right :) Please judge me.

Oh yeah and stop pretending you took a poll to use terms like "average Indian feels this way". I hypothesized if it had anything to do with the 90s era because I keep reading "It's the 90s all over again..." blah, blah. Then read better. If your source of reading is online message boards then please continue this path of ignorance. We were world champions in 1983. We must have been doing something right :) We were actually world champions a good 55 years earlier, in 1928. Hockey used to be the game. Of course these days yengsters even wonder why Hockey is national game. Please judge me. Will do, when time allows. For now I encourage you to read and improve your understanding of history :winky:
