They're not really comparable.

Atapattu managed the gand total of 1 after his first 6 innings and Steve Waugh took 3 years before scoring his first Test 100. Give them chances and I'm sure they won't disappoint us.

I'm not giving up on him, it's just that now is not his time. He needs to go back to drawing board (FC) and he can make a come back next year. That is, unless he plays really well in the 2nd innings to change our mind.

I see a better leader in Raina than Kohli now. Kohli is not ready for test cricket and far from ready for the English tour

As for Rohit Sharma, come back when he scores runs in his next series. The ODI series was his first good one in over 3 years. If that was the policy of the selectors vvs laxman would have never gotten selected. Tendulkar would have to have waited long as well. I never been a big fan of the "do well in ODIs then play test cricket." policy. Raina is doing well right now and more power to him but he not Indias best replacement for one of the big 3 and if he is Indian cricket is going to be in a lot of trouble in 2-3 years.

Lets not forget how everything changed in the Australian WC match when Raina came in and Yusuf was dropped. Then in the field for India you had Kohli on one side and Raina on the other - India's two best fielders. That alone saved 20 runs. Plus a lefty down the order and a righty after Gambhir both of which can help India bat a full 50 overs.

spectre Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 you nailed it, sir stat junkies will only read the numbers and not see the match situations I cant even count how many times Raina has played match winning and match saving performances in ODIs Even in his short test stint so far, he has done much better than all the so called 'future indian greats' Had a big partnership with Laxman in winning a test. Contributed in a huge partneship with Sachin when the team was in a big hole and Now, two back to back match saving/match winning performances. Still people are not satisfied, but they ejaculate seeing the immaculate technical capabilities of other young superstars who have done exceedingly well for far, in their dreams. The preferance for Kohli emerges from indian obsessioj with stats...no one has had that perfect a start to his career. And in that sense he deserves credit. But he will have to do the hard work in Tests for me to be convinced of his technique. LOl...you do realise kohli bats at 3 and Raina at 6 riight in ODIs? they are not that far apart. infact Raina is better. Both are averaging in the lower 40's in the same period...(that is considering raina's second phase in ODIs).

I would not be worried about kohli. perhaps it will wake him up to work harder.
bihutoli Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 My vote goes to Raina. This guy's got the right temparament. He'll go very very far for India. In a way I am happy Raina managed to cement his place for the English tour. Hope he does well there too, else Kohli lovers will be out with daggers!
