AMSTERDAM: The Dutch parliament voted on Tuesday to ban ritual slaughter of animals, a move strongly opposed by the country's Muslim and Jewish minorities, but left a loophole that could let traditional butchery continue. The bill by the small Animal Rights Party, the first such group in Europe to win seats in a national parliament, passed the lower house of parliament and must be approved by the upper house before becoming law. It stipulates that livestock must be stunned before being slaughtered, contrary to the Muslim halal and Jewish kosher laws that require animals to be fully conscious. "This way of killing causes unnecessary pain to animals. Religious freedom cannot be unlimited," Marianne Thieme, head of Animal Rights Party, said before the vote. "For us religious freedom stops where human or animal suffering begins." In a rare show of unity, the Netherlands' Muslim and Jewish communities -- about 1 million and 40,000 respectively in a total population of 16 million -- have condemned the proposed ban as a violation of their religious freedom.

While this move is kind to certain animals, the Dutch will alienate large sections of Muslim and Jewish populations with this legislature. Also, these kind of bans don't work locally. Its a good time to be a neighbour of Netherlands. All these people have to do is open an abattoir just across the border and sell Halal/Kosher meat from there. Good returns guaranteed. Narcotics are legal in Netherlands, but Halal/Kosher is not. :D

What is the advantage of halal or kosher way of slaughtering' date=' except the religious significance?[/quote'] The rationale ( stated rationale) behind Halal is that when the blood is drained off an animal, the chances of someone catching diseases is reduced. Blood apparently is a better carrier of germs than flesh. Halal-ed meat also doesn't spoil as quickly. Consumption of blood is considered haraam.

I didn't follow your question. The article says that Halal/Kosher will be forbidden on the grounds of animal cruelty. According to Islamic law, the animal has to be Halal-ed when alive. Carrion is considered haraam. So, if the animal is stunned, it is not entirely in its senses and I don't know how that is categorized. Basically in Halal, 1) The knife shouldn't be seen by the animal. So it isn't scared at the time and can die peacefully. 2) The animal is laid down and the knife is placed on it softly till the jugular/wind pipe are located. 3) The head should be severed by a swift incision near the jugular/ wind pipe area. 4) The blood should be drained out. 5) Then the head should be aligned towards Mecca. I may not be a 100% right here. But this is the rough procedure.

I'd like to see live animal export banned. Australian cattle are needlessly beaten and tortured by ****heads in filthy and sub standard abbatoirs - most of these poor animals die on the way to their destination (Asia, Middle East)

I asked about the hygiene related advantages that you mentioned in halal slaughter. So if the animal is stunned and then slaughtered, it might not feel the pain and the hygiene advantage is preserved as well. Of course it might go against Islamic law.

People who harm defence-less animals should be shot in their balls and then thrown in a tub full of tobasco sauce ... these effing numbskulls are a disgrace to the concept of evolution and humanity. Well done Netherland people :hail:
Don't you stay in the USA?? Country with one of the highest rates of per capita meat consumption? Are defenseless animals not harmed there, before they are consumed?

Don't ask negative questions :afridi: I am all for defenseless animal when it suits me ..
:D Before this thread degenerates into something else, here is a semi related question: The Netherlands is also called Holland. But the people from the place are called Dutch?? What gives?

You lot should go watch some footage of animal cruelty in these abbatoirs before talking about hypocrisy and what not. And by animal cruelty, I mean completely unnecessary harm inflicted on the animal, probably done by the ****heads for some cheap fun.

Holland actually are two sates in the west of the Netherlands. The Netherlands is actually the only correct reference and derived from the fact that they are below sea level, so "lower country". Having said that, the dutch themselves use both names.

You mean me? Well, I know its cruel. Halal or not, it is still painful for the animal. I can't stand and watch all that. But why am I the hypocrite??? I didn't do nothin.

But why is some one from Holland not a Hollander/Hollandish, or someone from the Netherlands not a Neanderthal, but Dutch??
