EnterTheVoid Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 I will be in Malaysia later this year and I am planning on heading there. Air Asia flights from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi cost like $25 AUD one way. Check out the 'Sky Bridge' whilst you're there, its an absolutely kick ass engineering marvel.

Mariyam Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Been there last year with ma buddies. It was a part of a greater SE Asia tour last year. Wish I spent more days there. I think 7 days there, and you'll be totally relaxed. My advice to you ( we, actually my friends, not me, did a lot of research about the places before we went): Hire a car or a scooter depending on how many you are. Preferably hire one from the airport it self. We hired a car from the airport and a scooter from outside and got fleeced on the scooter deal. You will need it for mobility, because the cab service there is really poor. You will need an international license ( for Indians). Only one of us had an intl license.:giggle: , but we all still drove around. Petrol pumps are few, so keep a tab on the fuel levels. WHAT EVER HAPPENS, DO NOT TAKE THE HOTEL's vehicle to move around , even if you are in a 4 star or 5 star. You'll end up paying much more. And the fun is in exploring the place yourself. Not in having some Malaysian drive you around. :giggle: Most Hotels will have this : Island hopping cruise. Its an absolute must do. Do it twice, if you can in the 7 days. Visit the sky bridge. Get hold of a "Bollywood" guide. Actually, they'll find you if they know you are an Indian. They shot the climax of the movie Don ( SRk wala) there. They'll show you everything, where the disk was thrown, where the helicopter came from, where Boman ran to etc etc etc. And of course the sky bridge is very nice to see even without all that. Plus the cable car journey to and from the sky bridge is so much fun. And scary. Do the Seven Wells Waterfalls and jungle trek. Be careful of the monkeys around. One of my friend's digicam was snatched and thrown on the ground by a monkey. Its a very tiring trek and sress appropriately- trekking shoes, shorts, and a change of clothes if possible ( because your friends may push you in the waterfalls) Underwater world: Don't miss this either. Shopping tip: Try and avoid shopping from there. Not much to buy and its over priced. General rule of thumb when shopping in Malaysia. Always enter a shop after a Chinese family/ couple. In Malaysia, the Chinese are how we consider Marwaris here. Miserly. Typically, this is how the Chinese bargain: Malay shopkeeper: Belt for 500 ringgit Chinese guy: I'll give you 2 ringgit Malay: $#%^ off Thats when you enter and offer him 100 ringgit. These Chinese people always quote some ridiculous prices while negotiating. Shopkeepers prefer negotiating with Indians. Eventually buy the belt for 75 ringgit. Staying tip: Where ever you are, Langkawi is a honeymooner's paradise. Mostly Indian and Chinese. You'll find Indian couples everywhere. Its so bad that one of the clubs we went to had " honeymooners night" and played achcha sila diya remix after livin la vida loca. If you are going with your friends, make sure you stick around with a girl. That way, people will think that you are honeymooning and get stuff for free or get upgrades. Malaysians are quite nice that way. But they aren't stupid. If they see the girl isn't wearing mangalsutra/chudaas they'll take back the freebies. In that case, you have to, as I did, say that you are Muslim and you don't wear mangalsutra. :--D Oriental Village: Its like Choki dani of Jaipur. Get around in a segway stand vehicle. Cool experience. Don't take international roaming, I did. It is damn expensive. ( at least for India). Take an airtel card from India or take a TZigu card from Malaysia. It'll be cheaper. Go to Black sand beach and Datai Bay. Lots of water sports like Jet skiing and all that. I didn't go for all that. My friends did. Food and drink not a problem there. Even for veggies. Ample variety for everyone. USD is almost accepted everywhere. Even at petrol pumps. Lemme know if you have any specific queries. Hope this helped.

Plan on giving all the bars, night clubs and everything else a miss. No point travelling half way around the world for that, you can find them anywhere.

You can feel slight tremors if you focus hard. Obviously, thats an illusion and the bridge doesn't really shake. But it still gets scary. :nervous:

If you want to scare your friends even more, (though I'm sure your choice of music must already be doing the trick) insist that they accompany you to the top of peak Raya Gunung. There is a resort/restaurant there with on a steep cliff-side from where you can see nearly 1000m below and the Thai border. The view can make you dizzy. There is an echo point where and it takes a good half a minute (minimum) for the echo to return. :omg:

As for the sadistic violence, its pretty tame compared to what kids are exposed to these days. As for extreme danger, one of my mates went Sky Diving. At 14, 000 feet (~ 5 Km), he got absolutely paralyzed with fear and started having convulsions. He chickened out and they had to bring the plane down. 500$ down the drain. The story is doing the rounds on my friends facebook. Had a quite chuckle ever since reading it.
