Brainfade Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 Apparently, Sesame Street* has been petitioned by some LGBT activists that two of their male characters must marry so kids can be exposed to the concept of gay marriage. I am indifferent about the whole gay marriage controversy, but I don't need for my 4 and 6 yr olds to think about sexuality. Apparently, to make it politically correct, they already have an HIV-positive character. If this is part of a "progressive" way of life, we are in trouble. *For all you single, unencumbered people here: Sesame Street is a popular cartoon for 3 - 7 year olds. Somewhat educational. Mostly silly.

DomainK Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 Kids that young need not know too many things about adults. They need to know about toys, super heroes, fairies and video games.
yoda Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 I always though Ernie was gay. On top of that you have Cooc(k)ie monster and a bird who is apparently "big". Don't see the big deal.
akshayxyz Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 Usually I am able to justify just about anything...let me try this one. May be they just mean that as a kid, if s/he can understand that a man and woman can be married, they must also know that even same-sex people can be married. That is it, and nothing more - no details about any type of marriage. I mean, even for a straight couple, kids know about being married - w/o knowing about whys and hows. So that, lets say the kid is introduced to a gay-couple on some social occasion or in news or on internet - they do not have any bias, or raised eyebrows or whatever.
DomainK Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 ^ If no details about any type of marriage needs to be conveyed to the kids, there is no need to tell them about gay marriages, right? So all the kids need to know is adults get married. If you make efforts to tell them about gay marriages, you need to tell them what it is and why it is different from conventional marriages. And then you need to tell them about sexual interests. Kinds are never told about marriages. Most kids just learn about them from the environment around them. If the society makes gay marriages acceptable, kids will automatically learn that they are acceptable. No need to specially feed it to them, right?
akshayxyz Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 I would reserve my expert comments, until I know their exact demands. For now I see it as - if there is some gay-couple in some kids' comic, then it should not be a problem, as they are as likely to come across gay-couple in real life, or any other medium...ok.. not as likely, but still very likely. As you rightly said - they need to know about gay-marriage, as much as they know about regular marriage.
Stuge Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 this is Strange .why do they want kid that small to know eveything .I don't think they will understand much .
Clarke Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 What's worse, nickelodeon/liberal media is planting conspiracies like carbon related global warming/climate change in the minds of young kids by using sponge bob :hitler: http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/394240/august-09-2011/heatsteria?xrs=share_copy

It was on Time magazine, which is a good bit more credible than either Fox News or Comedy Central. Apparently, the idea is for LGBT kids to accept themselves as beautiful people. I wonder what peer-reviewed science there is to back up the progressive notion that 5-yr olds know they are LGBT. Just more "in your face" advocacy. http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/08/10/petition-calls-for-sesame-streets-bert-and-ernie-to-be-married/ ... that allowing the characters to marry or introducing a transgender character could help bullied and struggling LGBT kids "know that they ARE BEAUTIFUL and their lives are worth living." Ram Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 No thank you. There’s absolutely no need to force-feed information about any of our social institutions (common and uncommon) to kids aged 3-7. Whether it is the LGBT activists wanting to expose kids to gay marriage or the catholic church wanting to teach about conventional marriage, no thank you! That is the age for the kids to play, interact with other kids, discover the value of team-work etc, not ponder about the complexities of our societal structure. Besides, let them observe what is going on around them and make up their own minds. And I have to say – the LGBT activists aren’t really doing their people any favor by trying be more aggressive with their agenda. What they end up doing is riling up more convervatives, ultimately hurting their cause. They should aim for gradual, subtle change of mindsets, not a hurricane style gale of brainwashing. P.S; On a related note, I also have a huge problem with kids of catholic (or for that matter Hindu, Islamic or Jewish) parents, being automatically labeled a catholic child. Why assign it an identity by default? Let the kid grow up, look around and make up its own. Whether the child chooses to be catholic, Hindu, Islamic or an unbeliever, that a choice that should left to the individual.
cowboysfan Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 gay marriage is not the same as gay sex,i see a lot of gay and lesbian couples out there having and raising kids,i guess its better they learn that a marriage is just not between a male and a female early in their lives.
DomainK Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 gay marriage is not the same as gay sex' date='i see a lot of gay and lesbian couples out there having and raising kids,i guess its better they learn that a marriage is just not between a male and a female early in their lives.[/quote'] They don't need to learn anything. Kids learn from the society. If the society learns that it's normal, the kids will automatically learn that it's normal. have you ever heard anyone say "kids between 3 and 7 need to learn about marriage"? If kids that age need not learn about marriage specifically, they sure as hell don't need to learn about gay marriage.
cowboysfan Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 I cant speak for parents but it will be quite difficult for them to explain why a friend of their child has two mommies, cant see anything wrong with having gay parents on TV.
Brainfade Posted August 12, 2011 Author Posted August 12, 2011 I cant speak for parents but it will be quite difficult for them to explain why a friend of their child has two mommies' date=cant see anything wrong with having gay parents on TV. You see ... therein lies the problem. Leaving parenting to TV. Of course it is difficult; but it is part of a parent's responsibility. If you didn't want to do the difficult things, you should've kept it in your pants (not directed at YOU, but people in general ...). Second, where do you draw the line? Show divorces to 3-yr olds because divorce is so common and normal? Certainly more common than gay marriage. How about infidelity? It is as common as gay marriage, I'd bet. Pre-marital friendships-with-benefits? I see where you're coming from, cbf. I just don't think Sesame street (a show for 3 - 7 yr olds) is the place for it. My solution is easy - as of last Monday, my kids don't watch Sesame Street.

If we are ****ing lucky, the institution of marriage and all such failed social institutions may not exist by the time they grow up.

There are cases in other parts of the world where children grow up with one parent or the other and does fine. Alternatively many would even argue whether we need to have children considering the situation this planet is in.
