CSK Fan Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 The 5 types of reactions to a heavy defeat No one likes one's team to be on the losing side. Its a bitter pill to swallow. But different fans react to a heavy defeat differently. Here are five different types found on internet forums 1) Sack all the seniors, re-build the team The quick and natural fix for any defeat. The share of blame for a defeat is S+F+(A^3)+(100-R) where S is the player's star power( or how many sponsors he has) , F is the fan-following (how many retarted eulogies have been started by his fans in the preceding months) and A is the age of the player. R is the number of runs scored by the player. So in order, here's how the blame will be propotioned for the India team Sachin Dhoni Harbhajan Raina Laxman Sehwag Gambhir Dravid SreeSanth Ishant PK Typical Fan 1 comment - " Dravid averages 13.5 in the last 20 overs of this innings. And he is supposed to be the super-star. His first innings 100 is history now, this is the most important innings in the history of Indian cricket. Why do we carry this deadwood" Typical Fan 2 comment : - "We have to build keeping in mind the future. The geriatric seniors will not last more than 2-3 years at the most(never mind that most of the never comers last for 2-3 months at most). Sack everone and build from scratch" A prime example of the latter is the Pakistan team which builds from scratch ever 3 months and has left experts wondering why despite this very efficent method, they are still languishing at the bottom of the table 2) Sack the captain, coach and selectors With more power comes more accountabilty obviously. And the selectors messed it up by not picking such champions like Rohit Sharma and Tyagi who would have single-handedly won us the series. But instead what we got were trundlers like PK and Raina. They need to be held accountable and much as we would like them all to be rounded up in Eden Gardens and throw cricket balls at them, we would be content to see them disgracefully sacked. Typical Fan 1 comment - "I dont like Fletcher's face, plus he has much more hair than Gary which is one of the reasons for our defeat. I am sure he used subliminal messages to cause the downfall of our champion team within 2 series Typical Fan 2 comment - "If only Dhoni had kept a third-man through out the series, we would be leading 3-0 now. Time for Gambhir to be captain" For example, see point 1 3) Its all IPL's fault When BCCI and Modi decided on a domestic cricket league, little did they know the far-reaching consequences of this decision. Not only has this money-hungy league caused the retirement of great cricketers, its also caused legends like Jogi to concentrate on T20s. There is no end to the list of the evils of IPL. From Yuvraj's tummy to Sree's paunch, from Gambhir's shoulder to Sehwag's ear, from short balls to our bowling woes, from the lack of UDRS to the availabilty of Praveen Kumar. When Hitler commited suicide, little did he think he would be re-incarnated as a domestic cricket league to continue spreading evil in the world. No wonder England is so cautious of IPL which is turning its sight to its nemesis America next Typical Fan 1 comment - " Say no to IPL. Its going to save Indian cricket, society and also control inflation" Typical Fan 2 comment - " Didn't they bowl short balls in the IPL"? 4) The team was never deserving This team sucks donkey balls. They fluked their way to a world cup win and the no 1 spot. It was too good to last. One big defeat by a team in form somehow shows us our right spot. We were being ahead of ourselves and needed this shock. This one series negates the two years of effort and achievement this team had Typical Fan 1 comment - "Enlgand deserve to be the true number 1 as India cannot win anything away from home (even though its England that have won mostly at home. No such criteria for them). 5) Sh!t happens This one( the reason) is very close to my heart. Thats life, even the best sometimes fall. But the best always re-group and come-back. Have seen almost two years of outstanding cricket from this team and these players and am not going to give up on them just yet. The cricket has been ordinary and not up to the high standards they have shown but I know they have had a hectic year of non-stop playing, sometimes in gruelling test conditions, sometimes in the glaring spotlight of the IPL circus. This series might be considered by some as the biggest ever, but I can still forgive my team one bad series. Sh!t happens, onto the next series now .........................
fineleg Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 I agree with #5. Despite the huge disappointment and demoralizing defeat, Sh!t happens. It happens to the very best and can happen to any and all. Hopefully they will regroup and recover for the Aus series.

It was disheartening to lose first 2 tests, as we really had some chances where we could have turned it other way, or at least save the matches. But, now I have accepted the fact that this is just one of that bad phase, where things just do not go your way. And as Geff-Boycott said - now we must play for pride, w/o worrying about 3-0, 4-0, or #1 ranking or any such number. Recall our good moments/days and play for that pride. That is the only way we are going to get back on track.

Wanted to add, it is also important that BCCI and coach/captain/players learn from this series. If they accept the real reasons and learn the lessons that this series teaches them, they will actually emerge stronger than they were in the past.

There is probably not one reason -- all 5 reasons you listed have some merit to it and a couple more that you didn't like players in poor form. It is naive to think that this is an aberration and that we would start our winning ways in the next away series. Can you send the same team (minus zak that is) and win in Australia ? This series has exposed our weaknesses and it will be prudent to work on them diligently. Not a complete overhaul, but everyone - selectors, coach, captain , seniors - should look into themselves and make corrective actions.

Dooks Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Duncan fletcher is the problem. We can't become sh|te overnight. Our downfall started with his arrival. For example, we should have won 3-0 in the WI but we couldn't. Fletcher should have been the one to give all the insights in to the England team but nothing -nada. Wait for the excuses to come out of Fletcher when he is sacked/or leaves his post.
fineleg Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Definitely not 5. This is some thrashing. Yes, its a thrashing. But that sorta sh!t happens when you least expect it in life, thats life. But the team and bcci definitely need to go back to the drawing board, and learn from this. And learnings from this may include - IPL contribution to fatigue, scheduling, better pitches for domestic matches, better preparation, more warmup matches in away tours, injury management, bcci being less greedy etc etc.
