Nasser Hussain: It's time for England's batsmen to answer the wake-up call It's time for England's batsmen to answer the wake-up call By NASSER HUSSAIN 6th February 2012 England's batsmen have all built fantastic records and have batted beautifully in all conditions apart from these, but there have been hints that there was a chance something like this would happen here. When the ball has done a bit and when the bar has been raised, EnglandÃÔ batsmen have struggled at times, against South Africa in Johannesburg, against Australia at Headingley and Perth and at home against Pakistan in 2010. Now they have been found wanting against proper bowling, spinners who can turn it both ways. This does not make them bad players. It just means they are not the finished article, and just because they have bashed Australia and India around, it doesnÃÕ mean they have sorted out the game. Cricket has a habit of hitting back and biting you on the backside. The mitigating factor is the quality of the Pakistan attack. Make no mistake, this is a very good bowling line-up, better than the ones England are likely to face in Sri Lanka and India. But that is how Test cricket should be. It was how it was when players had to face Muttiah Muralitharan spinning it both ways, Shane Warne in his pomp, Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram reverse swinging it and any number of great West Indian fast bowlers. It means that, when the going gets tough, EnglandÃÔ batsmen have to find a way of getting the job done, of making tough, ugly runs when the game is not in their favour. LetÃÔ look at individuals. Ian Bell averaged 112 last year and has proved an excellent player against good spin bowling. But against great spin bowling he has always struggled, and he has done so again here against Saeed Ajmal. The case of Kevin Pietersen confounds me because he has performed against great bowling but in recent times has struggled against decent bowling. And I havenÃÕ liked the sight of him and others staring at the big screen, shaking their heads after DRS verdicts. ItÃÔ the same for both sides. Work it out and get on with it. I am a big believer in only making changes for the better. We are seeing young batsmen like Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler emerge in one-day cricket but for Tests I would take the same seven batsmen to Sri Lanka. Look at how Stuart Broad has repaid EnglandÃÔ faith after they stuck with him during a bad period last year. Look at what Alastair Cook did after England stuck with him in 2010. Show faith in people you believe in and there is every chance they will repay that faith. Eoin Morgan hasnÃÕ done it consistently yet in Test cricket, as Broad and Cook had done when they had their bad patches, but I donÃÕ think England will draw a line under him after a three-Test series because they like his temperament so much. Andrew Strauss has enough credit in the bank to be given an extended chance to regain his best batting form because he has been an outstanding leader who has again marshalled his bowling attack superbly during this series. Yet Strauss needs a big score soon for his peace of mind and my only concern, with him missing one-day cricket, is his extended absences. Strauss is a touch player and I feel they need to be playing more often than power ones. We wonÃÕ see the captain again until the warm-up games in Sri Lanka and thatÃÔ a worry. This is a wake-up call for England. This is the game telling them, éold on, donÃÕ look too far ahead. You have done it at home and in Australia but you havenÃÕ done it in Asia for a decade against anyone other than Bangladesh. DonÃÕ get ahead of yourselves. I would say to England, forget the IPL, forget world No 1 status, forget your legacy as one of the greatest England teams and just work out a way of getting runs in sub-continental conditions. I still think this group of batsmen can do that. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricket/article-2097358/Englands-batsmen-need-answer-wake--Nasser-Hussain.html

Interchange between Aamir Sohail and Nasser Hussein during commentary - Nasser: Do you see any new upcoming fast bowlers coming from Pakistan? Aamir: I see Rahat Ali, hes rated very highly and bowls with express pace few moments later.... Aamir to Nasser: Do you see any better batsmen who can play spin coming from England? Nasser:  :confusedman:

48 out of 60 wickets fell to spin. Pringle's take: With two more Test series in Asia this year, England’s batting against spin, both naive and confused against Rehman and Saeed Ajmal here, needs to make serious improvements, otherwise they won’t be No 1 at the end of the year. In fact, South Africa could now topple them by April 1, should Graeme Smith’s team manage a clean sweep over New Zealand next month

Hussain is still deluded to believe that Eng may not struggle against India or SL coz Paki bowlers are better. What he doesn't understand is that Paki bowlers looked better coz the pitches were dry and turned square right from session 1, Day1. India and SL will not provide batting paradises to Eng anymore, at least not India after the kind of pitches India played on in Eng and Aus, and they will see rank turners when they visit sub-continent. Eng were blanked 5-0 in Ind in odis and in Tests they will struggle much more than they did in odis.

Maybe Hussain thinks they will get the sort of batting pitches they got last time they visited. Guess what, this time round it's back to the 90s kind of tracks where 3 spinners will operate and the pitch will start deteriorating right from day 1.

Why do you think you really need crumbling Pitchs...Pakis whitewashed England in normal pitches... (may be they are laughing by reading such comments) looks like you are taking revenge thing too seriously :dontknow:

They were not normal pitches. The pitches were so dry that the ball was spinning a lot right from Day 1 session 1. This is what I meant by crumbling pitches. Maybe I should have used the words dry and turning tracks instead of crumbling. Even Hafeez was turning the ball and making life hell for English batsmen while bowling with the new ball on Day 1. As for Pakis laughing they can laugh all they want while watching highlights of Pak-India game in Mohali held Mar 30th 2011 :haha:

^wishful thinking....
Let's see what happens when we get turning tracks. Unfortunately in its greed, BCCI has asked curators to create batting pattas so that the game goes till day 5 and ends in a high scoring draw. Whenever we have got turners, like against Aus in 2004 or SA in 2008 our bowling attack has looked in a different league altogether.

getting turning tracks is wishful thinking.
Would have agreed with you earlier but looks like these series whitewashes have shocked BCCI as well. Srinivasan said Eng and Aus will lose as well if they play in India and I am sure he understands that's gonna happen on turners and not pattas :--D This time round the curators will have the license to prepare turners and not worry about how long the game goes for. BCCI's golden goose's (IPL) future depends on it as if India loses at home nobody will follow IPL. Wait and watch as Eng series will be throwback to 90s with turners and 3 spinners in the team, especially since India got extra seaming tracks when they toured England.
