Sir john Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Strained relations between Pakistan and the US have actually impacted on a cricket lecture in Mumbai, which was to be delivered by the iconic Imran Khan, the 1992 World Cup-winning captain, on Thursday. Instead of holding fort at the Cricket Club of India, Imran (head of the Tehreek-e-Insaaf and a former Member of the National Assembly) will be attending an all-party meeting in Islamabad that very day. Yusuf Raza Gilani, the Pakistan Prime Minister, has called that meeting after consultations with key political parties. A couple of days ago, another Pakistani, Shoaib Akhtar, had to give Mumbai a miss. But that was for entirely different reasons. The lecture (third in Dilip SardesaiÃÔ memory), though, is going to be held as scheduled. With changes, of course Kapil Dev, another icon, is the replacement speaker and the topic for the evening has been drawn up afresh. So, instead of êndo-Pak Cricket Can Bridge The Gap Between The Countries? Kapil will be speaking on õhe Future of Indian Cricket? Not that he couldnÃÕ have spoken on the original topic. KapilÃÔ India debut, after all, was in the high-on-profile Revival Series of 1978-79. Imran may now do the honours next year. While Sunil Gavaskar delivered the inaugural lecture, in 2009, Bishan Singh Bedi was the guest speaker last year. Both played with Sardesai, who passed away in 2007, at the age of 66. Imran, by the way, has been a vehement critic of the US (and his own government). In fact, in an interview to The Telegraph in February, heÃÅ torn into Barack ObamaÃÔ predecessor in the White House, George Bush, and his own head of state. Specifically, Imran said: ŵhe Bush administration considered 170 million Pakistanis to be tissue paper, to use and throw, in its war on terror. Bush didnÃÕ see that a criminal (Asif Ali Zardari) would be sitting as our President and destroying our country... One puppet (General Pervez Musharraf) left and America wanted another in his place... Gilani and Imran arenÃÕ buddies, but the latterÃÔ strong views on the US could come in handy for the Prime Minister on Thursday.
Stuge Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Kapil wants BCCI to end club vs country debate and blasts Tendulkar 100th ton hype NEW DELHI: Former captain Kapil Dev has called on the Indian cricket board to help bring an end to the club vs country debate by paying players more for representing India. Former players including Shane Warne and Michael Holding have accused Indian cricketers of risking injuries by playing in the Indian Premier League and the ongoing Champions League, and missing international cricket as a result. "Both forms of the game are run by the same organization (the Board of Control for Cricket in India), yet a player gets more money for representing a club than while playing for the nation," Kapil was quoted as saying in The Times of India on Friday. "Let them pay more to those who play for India, then we'll see how many of our players skip series," Dev said during a lecture in Mumbai. Several top cricketers earn in excess of $1 million from their clubs in each six-week season of the Indian Premier League, which is organized by the BCCI. In contrast, the BCCI offers annual contracts of a maximum of $200,000 with additional match fees of $14,000 (Tests), $8,000 (one-dayers) and $4,000 (Twenty20 internationals). Nine players, including star batsman Sachin Tendulkar and premier fast bowler Zaheer Khan, suffered injuries on a recent tour of England when the team was blanked 4-0 in Tests and also failed to win any limited overs game. The testing tour of England was part of a busy season. India's players took part in the IPL immediately after winning the World Cup on home soil in April and then toured the West Indies before going to England. "The Indian team couldn't even get time to unwind and enjoy their World Cup triumph. They got just four days before the IPL began. When you don't get enough time to unwind you lose the passion to play. That's what happened in England," said Kapil, who led India to World Cup victory in 1983. Meanwhile, spin great Bishan Bedi blamed the limited overs formats for the lack of quality spinners in the country. "The fault lies with us. If you want to see more Twenty20 or one-day cricket, this is what you will get," the left-arm spinner said at a book release function in New Delhi. "By bowling only four or 10 overs one can't get control, if one is not bowling a lot you will only get mediocre bowlers and that is what we have at the moment," he added. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/top-stories/Kapil-Dev-wants-better-pay-for-India-players/articleshow/10183842.cms Kapil blasts Tendulkar's 100th ton hype (AFP) 6 hours ago NEW DELHI Former India great Kapil Dev has slammed the media's obsession with Sachin Tendulkar achieving 100 international centuries, saying the focus should be on the team's performances. During India's recent tour of England, speculation reached fever pitch about Tendulkar reaching the landmark figure. But the star failed to fulfil his fans' hopes and was left stranded on 99 hundreds -- 51 in Tests and 48 in one-day internationals. India were blanked 4-0 in the Test series, conceding their number-one ranking to the hosts, and also lost the one-dayers 3-0. "You seem more keen about Sachin's 99 hundreds and not about how we are going to win the next series," Kapil said while delivering the Dilip Sardesai lecture in memory of the former Test batsman in Mumbai on Thursday. "I am not saying don't give credit to individual performances, but the country should come first. "Everyone knows Sachin has 99 centuries, but how many know which of those have ended in victories? Out of Sachin's 99 hundreds, 60 have ended in wins. If anyone reports that I'll be happy. "We have to change our mindset. If we lose the match, what's the use of statistics? To hell with that!" Kapil, 52, regarded as one of the best all-rounders of his era, claimed a then-world record 434 Test wickets, besides taking 253 one-day wickets, before quitting the game in 1994. He also scored 5,248 runs in Tests and 3,783 in one-dayers. Kapil, who became India's first World Cup-winning captain in 1983, also blamed tight scheduling for the team's disastrous show in England. The Indian players figured in the lucrative Twenty20 Indian Premier League (IPL) a few days after winning the World Cup in April before leaving for the West Indies and England tours. "The players did not get time to unwind and enjoy their World Cup victory. They had worked four years for it. But they just got four days before the IPL began," Kapil said. "They should have got more time to enjoy the moment. If you don't give time to unwind, you lose the passion to play. That's what happened in England." Kapil also wanted players to be paid more for representing the country than their IPL franchises. "How can you give more money to play for a club and not for playing for the country?" he said. Kapil, who played 131 Tests and 225 one-dayers over a 16-year career, wanted the burden on seamers to be reduced in order to avoid injuries, like the ones to current spearheads Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel. "The cricket board should understand how much burden the fast bowlers can take," he said. "They can't bowl for 365 days."

triam Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Kapil really how many test matches did it take you to reach 432 (especially the last 50 wkts or so) and what was all that hype about??
yoda Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 He makes some very valid points, especially regarding the SRT 100. There was more hype about that than even the test series. Then again, media hype should have no bearing on how the players themselves perform.
SachDan Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 "Everyone knows Sachin has 99 centuries, but how many know which of those have ended in victories? Lame attempt by Kapil to get his point across..why bother bringing up Sachin's stats if he was intending only to have a go at the media? Is he aware how many of his 5fers/10fers really helped India win?
maniac Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Jeez...I don't get the Kapil hate on this forum...Looks like most of the ICFers were born yesterday that they don't even recognise his greatness... Looks like you guys are brainwashed by our neighbours into beleiving Kapil was an ordinary cricketer... This is coming from me being SRT's biggest fans-SRT's role in the team can always be replaced but someone like Kapil comes only once in a generation and even 17 years after his retirement or 20 years since he was aging and declining as a cricketer we still haven't been able to find a replacement for him

Khalpat Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Kapil might be arguably the best cricketer ever played for India but its a known fact that he is never comfortable in front of mike. I recall two incidents(accidents I should say): 1. Remember Kapil had a short role as commentator and in one of the India Vs Srilanka match when Jayasurya got hit at his Box, Kapil's innocent comment live at TV was: Wife of Jayasurya should not worry, he is all right". I do not remember after that incident Kapil was ever invited for live commentary. :hysterical: 2. When certain media person at airport asked him when will India get another Kapil Dev at airport he thought for 5 mins took a pause then replied very innocentaly "My mother is very old and my father is no more, so I dont think its possible now". Left the place with surprised journalists. :hysterical:

Lame attempt by Kapil to get his point across..why bother bringing up Sachin's stats if he was intending only to have a go at the media? Kapil took extra long time for the sake of record - no one can defend that.. it is a fact. Kapil's interviews are half sense & half rant these days - it is a fact. On the bolded part of your post... SRT is yet to retire, we will see how soon we will be able to replace him. BTW, we have not been able to replace Ganguly yet. We have not been able to replace Kapil, not because he was superhuman, but because of inefficiencies of our system - when it comes to fast bowling resources. He was great, but not unarguably best among his peers across the world. Whereas SRT is miles ahead of his peers in more parameters than one, in fact barring only few. SRT has got his records without dragging his career, he is still performing comparable to current best. Or perhaps you are just passing a controversial statement to get some ICF publicity :winky:..

I am not just talking about Kapil the bowler but Kapil the all-rounder,so when you say peers are you talking about bowlers or allrounders? Yes,we are struggling to find a replacement to Ganguly but there is a pool of Left-handed middle order batsmen out there where there is a possiblity that atleast one of them can take his place but how many mercurial allrounders in Kapil's mould do you find not just in India but in the world... Dude I have been posting here long enough for people to know I don't troll and I don't need publicity on ICF to make me feel good about myself I haven't even dragged SRT into this argument...Let me make this clear I never said SRT can be replaced because I don't need to certify that SRT is a once in a life time cricketer all I was talking about is his role as a number 4 batsmen in tests and opener in ODI's. All I was saying is some people's comments on argubaly one of India's greatest cricketer angers mebecause I feel some of these kids don't even know Kapil's contribution to Indian cricket.
