Kapil might be arguably the best cricketer ever played for India but its a known fact that he is never comfortable in front of mike. I recall two incidents(accidents I should say): 1. Remember Kapil had a short role as commentator and in one of the India Vs Srilanka match when Jayasurya got hit at his Box, Kapil's innocent comment live at TV was: Wife of Jayasurya should not worry, he is all right". I do not remember after that incident Kapil was ever invited for live commentary. :hysterical: 2. When certain media person at airport asked him when will India get another Kapil Dev at airport he thought for 5 mins took a pause then replied very innocentaly "My mother is very old and my father is no more, so I dont think its possible now". Left the place with surprised journalists. :hysterical:
:hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: Vaguely remember the first one, no idea about the other one though.

I am not just talking about Kapil the bowler but Kapil the all-rounder,so when you say peers are you talking about bowlers or allrounders? Yes,we are struggling to find a replacement to Ganguly but there is a pool of Left-handed middle order batsmen out there where there is a possiblity that atleast one of them can take his place but how many mercurial allrounders in Kapil's mould do you find not just in India but in the world... Dude I have been posting here long enough for people to know I don't troll and I don't need publicity on ICF to make me feel good about myself I haven't even dragged SRT into this argument...Let me make this clear I never said SRT can be replaced because I don't need to certify that SRT is a once in a life time cricketer all I was talking about is his role as a number 4 batsmen in tests and opener in ODI's. All I was saying is some people's comments on argubaly one of India's greatest cricketer angers mebecause I feel some of these kids don't even know Kapil's contribution to Indian cricket.
My last comment was on lighter note one.. So chill and peace :two_thumbs_up: As I understand people here are not making fun of Kapil - the player. People are making fun of some of his not so sensible comments in the context of OP and recent past interviews. And the ones I/others listed as facts, are indeed facts - e.g. Kapil dragged his career at the *** end, just for the sake of record, the only blemish on his otherwise outstanding career. Also, if he can ask - "how many of SRT's centuries have resulted in wins" He should be ready to answer - "how many of his 5fers resulted in wins". There are no two ways about it.

@maniac : nobody hates Kapil as a player .People are commenting on what he said in the interview . I remember him saying how many Dravid centuries has resulted in a win? wow .I remember Dravid for his contribution in Adelaide test and Kolkata test, which India won. I may agree with few of his point ,but I may not agree with the rest he made . just for example :dravid played well in England ,but others just failed .

I have no problem with people laughing at Kapil Paaji's communication skills as he is and will always remain a simpleton from Haryana But when people start questioning his cricketing skills and contribution it angers me.... When he said Dhoni shouldn't have bowled in Lords I agreed with him but a lot of Dhoni fans were ridiculing him for that and now despite me being labelled as a Sachin Worshipper in the past don't agree with people challenging his greatness all of a sudden by taking his words out context...I don't see anything wrong when he said that people should not over hype Sachin's 100th 100 when the team has been fairing poorly.Despite personally Iam looking forward for the moment...I still agree with him. For saying that he dragged his career towards the end...check out his performance in one of his last international tours which was the SA tour and than make your comment...He was still an asset as an allrounder at the test level.

I fail to see that in this thread at least.

That was one issue for which there is no correct answer - it is a matter of perspective. And just because it came from great player Kapil Dev, it need not be correct. e.g In my perspective, Dhoni did right when, as a leader, he faced shortage of resources. And he did a good job - so deserves a pat on the back than otherwise. As for Kapil's comment on SRT's 100th 100 - no one is arguing that.. read the interview completely, some of his other comments do not make sense. Not to us at least.

Yeah Like we had a ready replacement to fill his shoes
Yes we did, and it was Srinath, again I have no complaints against Kapil he deserved that rope for all his efforts before, but then stop talking about Sachin's hype, it is not like Sachin is going around hyping up his 100th hundred

He is talking to the media about the hype and asking them to stop the hype cause he thinks the hype about individual milestones affects team performance.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni > Dev > Sachin. Sachin has poor cricketing brain, his 25/25 ODI innings split copied idea/Indian Captaincy/Mumbai Internationals Captaincy is testimony to that. He was decent batsmen in 90s. Thats it. I expect him to be reformed captain for MI's after playing under Mahendra Singh Dhoni in team India but he failed to fulfil expectations. Look where is MI is today under Bhajji.

Wow typical Indian whining here!! Can't listen to single crticism against thier 'Godly' players. Rather than insulting the messenger, try n understand his point. He is totally right about the priorities of current generation cricketers. Representing India is now taken for granted and Dhoni is probably the biggest culprit.

Jack asses galore these days on cricket fan boards, specially Indian ones with a How-dare-anyone-question-my-God...even if the criticism comes from an Indian great itself. Jeez!!

"Both forms of the game are run by the same organization (the Board of Control for Cricket in India), yet a player gets more money for representing a club than while playing for the nation," Kapil was quoted as saying in The Times of India on Friday. "Let them pay more to those who play for India, then we'll see how many of our players skip series," Dev said during a lecture in Mumbai.
Absolutely fair point. I am yet to find any player suggesting they play IPL for the love of the game. They all, including Sachin, play for one simple reason - money. Since BCCI is the organization that controls both it is fair to say if the money would be more on Test cricket side players, like Sachin, would put emphasis on that format and thus making Indian, and not Mumbai whatever is the team, proud.
I am not saying don't give credit to individual performances, but the country should come first. "Everyone knows Sachin has 99 centuries, but how many know which of those have ended in victories? Out of Sachin's 99 hundreds, 60 have ended in wins. If anyone reports that I'll be happy. "We have to change our mindset. If we lose the match, what's the use of statistics? To hell with that!"
Nothing wrong with that either. Sachin is part of the team which is claimed by modern day fans to be the greatest Indian team ever. And still the win stats are hardly anything to be proud of. If this is the best we ever had then simply put this is not good enough. Reminds me of a statistics study sometime back on CriciInfo where Ricky Ponting came out as someone who was part of most wins. Now I dont know about you guys but every Tom, Dick and Sachin would much rather have that instead of meandering for 99 centuries yada yada

Kapil's performance in the games where he played with Srinath was much better than the latter. Srinath and Kapil played 12 tests together. Srinath netting 33 wickets @ 36 and Kapil 39 @28.This included a series down under where Kapil took 25 in 5 tests. As for Kapil getting the rope, he never got as much rope as Sachin. Folks, like yours truly, who have seen both these greats playing will easily admit Kapil Dev was burdened with being India's best player from day 1. Sachin took his own time to develop and was given enough rope to perform, and then in his later years was again given enough rope, a courtsey that was not bestowed on his own contemprories like Ganguly, Dravid and VVS during latter years and Kambli etc in formative years. Kapil was compared with all-round greats from day 1 and was the main bowler who opposition feared from day 1. None of this for Sachin, so lets quit making SRT larger than life with enough rope and what have you. xxx

We have not been able to replace Kapil, not because he was superhuman, but because of inefficiencies of our system - when it comes to fast bowling resources. He was great, but not unarguably best among his peers across the world.
Really? How was he not amongst the best?
Whereas SRT is miles ahead of his peers in more parameters than one, in fact barring only few.
Simply put, an All Time Indian XI (test or One dayers) would still be pretty darn formidable without SRT. An All Time Indian XI without Kapil Dev looks pathetic. Does that give you a picture of SRT vis a vis Kapil in terms of importance??
