Kapil wants BCCI to end club vs country debate and blasts Tendulkar 100th ton hype

He is right about the hype but then this is what sells in India, and it's something natural when a player like Sachin is about to reach it. As far money making goes, there is absolutely nothing wrong it as long as your prostitutes [ Edit: Priorities }are right. Kapil has done commercials, earned by showing up for an opening of small shoe store and if there was IPL back in the day, he would have played it too. But why are we putting 2 greats down to prove something which is done by the media

True. Wouldn't want to make money from the ones infected by STDs.

Talk about selective stats....People are bringing Kapil the bowler's stats while comparing his contribution what about his batting contributions... People seem to forget that despite being India's premier fast bowler he also batted at number 6-7 in a game changing way which since has been a role filled by bits and pieces players like Jaddu,YKP,Bangar,Bharadwaj etc etc and so many other nobodies which is a disgrace in itself. He can walk into the current team as a batsmen alone even if you ignore his bowling. It's sad to see people downplay his contribution----Can't beleive I am saying this but it is sad to see were even Pakis and Poms respect Botham and I.Khan,we seem to downplay our greatest player of the previous generation.

First of all - I would not want to compare SRT with Kapil - I admire both for what they have done for Indian cricket. But, both have played in different eras in different setup and one was all rounder while other is pure batsman (with some bowling skills/brain).

Kapil was the best all-round cricketer ever to have played for India and by the looks of it, will remain there for ages to come...:--D
Lurker jee, you did not comment on this? As I understand, you would reckon that Kapil was best in world and not just India.
Take out Bradman and Sobers, you'll still have a formidable world XI, and your point is?
++ In every formidable world XI, every one has a replacement.
Really? How was he not amongst the best?
Of course he was amongst the best all-rounders, but may not be clearly best. And if you take the individual skills (not all round skills), then definitely not amongst the best. And it is my personal opinion that I give importance to excelling in one skill than being an all rounder.
lol at the bhashan and "holier than thou" bs by the usual suspects ... Kapil has a grand total of 90 ***in wkts in matches won ... had Tendulkar taken his bowling skills seriously he would have been past even that landmark too :hysterical: Ohh and shall we talk about the "I-want-to-go-past-Hadlee-chahey-dus-saal-kyon-na-lagey" story
That is cruel - so Kapil took other 340 wickets for some selfish reasons :P
.... Number of innings required for scalps 50 wickets : 28 innings 100 wickets: 44 innings 200 wickets: 85 innings (41 innings from 100 to 200) 300 wickets: 144 innings (59 innings from 200 to 300) 400 wickets: 200 innings (56 innings from 300 to 400) 434 wickets: 230 innings (30 innings from 400 to 434) []http://i.imgur.com/Y4Y9u.jpg[]
That is what I was talking about. In those matches towards the end, he became agonizingly slow - in terms of wickets/match

And a fair win-loss stats comparison is possible between a player who hardly featured outside arguably one of the greatest teams ever with a player who played most part of his long career in mediocre teams? Look at PwntingÃÔ stats after the retirement of Warne and McGrath.
Tells me that you have already conceded ke bhagwan-ji stats vis a vis win-loss is not gonna improve anytime soon. Thank you for making Kapil Dev's point...even if you are too proud to admit it :winky:

Kapil's wicket taking certainly slowed down in the latter half of his career after he took 250 wickets. However his average didnt vary wildly even in the latter stages of his career. He was under 33 for his last 150 odd wickets compared to his career average of 29 odd. Number of innings required for scalps 50 wickets : 28 innings 100 wickets: 44 innings 200 wickets: 85 innings (41 innings from 100 to 200) 300 wickets: 144 innings (59 innings from 200 to 300) 400 wickets: 200 innings (56 innings from 300 to 400) 434 wickets: 230 innings (30 innings from 400 to 434)
Those stats tells you about Kapil Dev and why people who dont look objectively at stats can make bounders. As per your number, Till about his 400th wicket Kapil was averaging about 2 wickets per innings, which one can extrapolate to 4 wickets per test, however if you just look at his wickets/test numbers they would start falling right after 50th test. If you compare Kapil versus Imran, say, you will see Imran took his 200th wicket in 42nd test while Kapil took 50 test, if you look closely they took the exact same number of innings to get to the 200th milestone. Point being there was little to choose between them as bowler although Imran has clearly the better average. xxx

Did you just call the Marathi a prostitute Rajiv. Darn even I wouldnt go there :giggle: Seriously though yep its all about money, and if there was IPL was back in the day Kaps would be the best of the breed. His sixes would be enormous, bowling would be sedate and fielding captivating.

Thora kaam mein vyast hoon bandhu, not that I didnt mean to comment. As I have always said my all-rounder selection 1-2 is Keith Miller & Kapil Dev, in that order.
Of course he was amongst the best all-rounders, but may not be clearly best. And if you take the individual skills (not all round skills), then definitely not amongst the best. And it is my personal opinion that I give importance to excelling in one skill than being an all rounder.
Well you will have to give more information than that surely. For example, a yardstick for me about the great players is how they perform against the best team of their time. In Kapil's case it would be West Indies. Please feel free to see which all-rounder amongst the 4 has better performance against West Indies. And lets extend that to One dayers, World Cup wins etc etc as well.

Check my response to Ganesh in this regards. Should give you a different perspective....perhaps.

Kapil took 30 innings to achieve the last 34 wickets to cross Hadlee's record. How is that not focusing on the milestone?

lol..you concentrated on one aspect that I didnt talk about. Missing forest for trees? Anyway, yes Kapil went too far later on. Should have called it a day right after South Africa series in early 90s.

I concentrated on it because my original point was about hanging on for achieving the milestone, it was never a comparison with Imran Khan or a judgement on the bowling abilities of Kapil which I have always admired.

My point was this. 50 wickets : 28 innings 100 wickets: 44 innings 200 wickets: 85 innings 300 wickets: 144 innings 400 wickets: 200 innings reads very differently to 50 wickets : 16 Tests 100 wickets: 25 Tests 200 wickets: 50 Tests 300 wickets: 83 Tests 400 wickets: 115 Tests. Just compare say the 200 and 300 wickets number in terms of innings and tests and see how different story they tell. xxx

I don't understand why criticism of Kapil's comments is taken as criticism of Kapil as a player. I would say Kapil went overboard in these comments, he should have stoped short of mentioning point related to how many centuries in win. Because cricket is a team game and secondly his own record is even poorer. But when I am criticising his comments, I won't doubt his credentials as a player and his contribution in growth of cricket in India. His would be first name when I put an all time indian XI. If you judge a player by comments that he makes in media, than I think Bishen Singh Bedi shouldn't have been allowed to play even Ranji Trophy.
