It is all about bowling action. If he a pacer has good action, he will have less injuries. Zahid's injury was less to do with bowling but more to do with false handling by captain. I think he had a leg injury and was still played by captain Rameej Raza as Akram also got injured and he was a newcomer and he bowled through injury which got serious after that test match in SL.

I completely agree on your point. Just to add, it also depends on how you train and your fitness levels. There's no way to say that Holding, Marshall, Lindwall etc. weren't as fast as today's bowlers. Even if they weren't they still would remain great. That's just the point I was trying to make. Mohammad Zahid had a back problem. Remember Ian Bishop?

Our conditions don't encourage fast bowling just like conditions in Australia, England and South Africa don't support spin bowling. Now, we need to find a way to work around what he have rather than cribbing about it. Srinath, Zaheer, Kapil have proved that if one's willing to work hard and have the right attitude we will produce fast bowlers. But again, I dream of having an England-like bowling attack and I guess it will always remain a dream unless another ice age grips the world.

And use of protecting gears like helmets and advent of bowling machine has made batsman fearless to face fast bowling. Bowling machine has eased it for everyone to face fast bowling. You still see so many 90 mph bowlers, more than ever right now, but batting has improved, even tailenders can bat now and then conditions for batting are better. There are very few seaming and bouncy pitches nowadays. But where are fast bowlers in test cricket? The fastest bowler at present in test is Steyn who is capable of reaching upto early 150s kph .In early 2000s we had Akhtar and lee capable of reaching late 150s in tests ,so in other words bowling speed declined by 7-10 kmph in a decade so the logic of with time speed ,skills strength increase is not applicable on fast bowler O/W we should have fast bowlers in cricket who should have been capable of hitting 160 regularly in tests

There are quite a dew genuine fast bowlers around, but no real express pacer right now, but it always happens time to time. IN 90s, we did not have any express pacer till Akhtar and Lee debuted who could bowl 155K. In 70s and 80s too, there was only Thomson who could bowl 155-160K speeds. There are only 5 bowlers in the history of cricket who has been clocked 160K Thomson, Lee, Akhtar, Tait, and Bond and except Thomson, other 4 played their cricket in the last 15 years. There was another bowler who was touted to be as quick as Thomson was Frank Typhoon Tyson, but he played in 50s and 60s, so we never know about him, but in the last 30-40 years, only these 5 guys are called express bowlers. There are a few guys who have the potential likes of Cummins who is very young and Adam Milne from New Zealand. Similarly, I hope Aaron progress in 2 years and gain some more pace to cross 155K, has already touched 153.4K.

Similar is Kapil Dev who is one of the greats as an alrounder, not just as a bowler.

He was quick, genuine fast, even Varun Aaron has clocked 95 mph Stuart Meaker as well, but Waqar was never as quick as Shoaib, Brett Lee, Bond, or Tait have been clocked. All these four bowlers have clocked 160K multiple times.

You don't see Varun Aaron bowing a 10 over spell averaging 145k+. Waqar was that quick, and arguably was fitter than Shoaib, Lee or Tait. Donald was not far behind when it came to bowling spells of sustained pace.
vishalvirsingh Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 RKT- I wish what u say comes true but I am kinda disappointed by seeing the speed at which Varun bowled...his pace was always slower than Umesh And sometimes He was so slow that he looked like the trundler VK...... A fast bowler shud not touch 120"s unless its a special slow ball...he was Slow and hence he got just 1 wicket in the match...he shud have been as fast as Umesh if not faster and hence wud have got 4 to 5 wickets at least even on the dry Pitch. He was Slow n un impresssive I just pray he doesn't go the Munaf way as he seemd like restraining himself as Munaf does. Umesh was good though not very Fast
