Rahane - 7/10 Provided steady if not explosive starts.Looks to be a find with his strong backfoot play and is not troubled by real pace.Should be a certainity in Tests as well as backup opener in ODIs. Expect him to be on the flight Down Under Parthiv Patel - 4/10 Disappointing with his penchant to play across the line. With the amount of experience he has, should have done better. Kohli - 8/10 Consistent as usual and has a great temperament. Not too sure about his performace on fast and bouncy pitches Down Under though. Gambhir - 7/10 Again Consistent but played a couple of loose strokes when he could have stayed on. A gritty fighter. MSD - 9/10 Nothing more needs to be said. The only criticism is his reluctance to place trust in fast bowlers. Spin will not be that effective outside SC Raina - 6.5/10 Great on subcontinental pitches and played true to his form. He really should try and emulate these knocks on bouncy wickets. Clears his front foot far too often . Ravindra Jadeja - 8/10 Great Allrounder for SC wickets.Played a few good knocks and always almost took wickets. Jury still out on his capability to play bigger knocks and outside the SC R Ashwin- 8/10 bowls a beautiful loop , is aggressive and calculating. Should now replace Harby for a few months (even for the tour Down Under) Needs to make the most of his opps and improve on batting and fielding Pravin Kumar- 5/10 Steady at best, but he cannot be considered a long term prospect unless he generates some more pace. Vinay Kumar- 4/10 Apart from the 4 wkts that he took,he doesnt add value to the team and should be discarded. Umesh Yadav & Varun Aaron : 6/10 and 8/10 respectively Too little of them has been seen to make a decision here. But both are exciting prospects. MSD would do well to trust their talent in the longer run and handle them carefully. Manoj Tiwary - Not rated since he played only one game.

Rahane looks good but he is too defensive at the start, our lower order is explosive but it wont be the case everytime where they will make up for a slow start. When he made his debut he played fearlessly, just seems to be that he's keen on staying as long as possible rather than playing naturally.

I think that was a weak point of his. I observed him to be fluent on the front foot and when the ball was pitched up but when it was a bit short against the seamers he was found wanting...uglyly opening the face of the bat and missing 7/10
Parthiv Patel - 4/10 Disappointing with his penchant to play across the line. With the amount of experience he has, should have done better.
In full agreement. 3.5/10
Kohli - 8/10 Consistent as usual and has a great temperament. Not too sure about his performace on fast and bouncy pitches Down Under though.
Oh he'll be fine on bouncy tracks...he has the game for it. 8/10
Gambhir - 7/10 Again Consistent but played a couple of loose strokes when he could have stayed on. A gritty fighter.
7.5/10 because he made contributions when it mattered
MSD - 9/10 Nothing more needs to be said. The only criticism is his reluctance to place trust in fast bowlers. Spin will not be that effective outside SC
I am tempted to give him 9.9/10 :--D
Raina - 6.5/10 Great on subcontinental pitches and played true to his form. He really should try and emulate these knocks on bouncy wickets. Clears his front foot far too often .
His performance this series has been quite decent. I think he deserves 7/10
Ravindra Jadeja - 8/10 Great Allrounder for SC wickets.Played a few good knocks and always almost took wickets. Jury still out on his capability to play bigger knocks and outside the SC
8/10
R Ashwin- 8/10 bowls a beautiful loop , is aggressive and calculating. Should now replace Harby for a few months (even for the tour Down Under) Needs to make the most of his opps and improve on batting and fielding
7.5/10
Pravin Kumar- 5/10 Steady at best, but he cannot be considered a long term prospect unless he generates some more pace.
Interchanging VK and PK. 4/10
Vinay Kumar- 4/10 Apart from the 4 wkts that he took,he doesnt add value to the team and should be discarded.
He was better than that...I'd actually say 5.5/10
Umesh Yadav & Varun Aaron : 6/10 and 8/10 respectively Too little of them has been seen to make a decision here. But both are exciting prospects. MSD would do well to trust their talent in the longer run and handle them carefully.
6/10 and 7/10
Manoj Tiwary - Not rated since he played only one game.
He held some catches as a sub. 5/10 - neither here nor there

Raina may have scored runs but in both the 4th and 5th ODIs he made a lot of chances for the bowlers. It looked like he could get out at any moment and that is something you never saw with MSD or Kohli or Gambhir.

But this the kind of game he has. He counter attacks and shatter the bowling plans of opposition. Viru plays similarly, so what is the problem. He did well in England and also here as well. Good thing about Rains is, he does not get bogged down and always look to score runs which makes it easy fro other batsmen and keeps the pressure of RR away. This is his fearless approach which terrorize opposition bowling. Look what Cook said.
Virat (Kohli), (MS) Dhoni and (Suresh) Raina harassed us a lot.

VK did better than Parthiv. I'd give him 6/10 and Parthiv 3/10. Really Parthiv was the only weak link, everyone else contributed in one way or the other.

You cannot compare Raina and Viru just because they both play attacking shots. Once Viru gets set, he can hit the ball all over the park all day without creating a single chance for the opposition. Viru's vulnerability is in the first 25-30 balls of his innings Raina on the other hand looked vulnerable even late in his innings in the 4th and 5th ODIs. Created a lot of half chances for the opposition, came down the track to find the bottom of the bat which was not caught because there were no fielders at Long off and long on. On any other these chances would have taken.

No you are wrong. Viru always gives chances. it is opposition which is in so much pressure that starts doing mistakes and drops him. Whenever a batsman plays in that mode, he is sure to give some chances. Remember Viru 309, and how many catches of him were dropped. Even in his 293, he catches dropped and those were tests. In ODIs, he gives even more chances and has not been very successful in ODIs because of over aggressive game that is why he had given a statement saying that he wants to bat 50 overs in ODIs. Sehwag is the kind of batsman who always gives chances to opposition and both Raina and Sehwag's game is similar aggressive but Raina is more reliable when it comes to ODIs rather than Sehwag I would say. Whenever team needs, Raina mostly responds well.

I am not a fan of Vinay. He is definitely someone who doesnt deserve a place in the team. However, I will give him 6.5/10 just for the sheer heart he put in , in the matches. The lad tried his best. The guy was ready to try something new, like try to increase pace, vary his pace and all. I wish him all the best and hope he comes out a faster and a better bowler in the future !

Firstly, Raina and Viru are two completely different players. The only similarity is that they both play attacking shots. Viru does not look vulnerable at the crease once he gets set. He doesnt scratch around getting edges, bottom of the bat shots looking tentative etc. In the whole of his 309 innings I remember around 2 catches dropped off him. One early on in his innings and the next in slips on the 2nd day. He doesnt average 50+ in tests for nothing. Raina's 80 that day might have been high scoring but he was not upto the mark, he was not hittling the ball cleanly and many were mistimed shots. With a different bowling attack he would have gotten out long before he did.

He had 4-5 catches dropped of him, not 2 and I am not talking about test. His overseas record is not that good and average only in 30s outside SC. If Raina plays only at home or in SC, he too will have a very good test record. I am talking about ODIs here and I will take Raina any day over Viru in ODIs. Raina is more reliable.

Sehwag averages 37 outside the SC. He averages 58 in Oz. His poor records are in England and SA where he averages in 25+. I really like Raina's temperament to the game. He is a livewire, a honest trier and much better fielder than Viru can ever be. However in batting, Raina has to lift his game up much higher before even starts to get compared to Viru.

INO, Raina is better than Viru in ODIs.

INO' date=' Raina is better than Viru in ODIs.[/quote'] I disagree. Not currently. if Raina has a really great next few years or Viru has some really poor years then that might happen.
