Vijay.Sharma Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I disagree. Not currently. if Raina has a really great next few years or Viru has some really poor years then that might happen.I agree with rkt...Raina is slightly ahead of Viru in the ODIs. Viru has taken forever to come good in ODI cricket whereas Suresh has been pretty much good right through. Of course comparing them is made even more difficult because one is an opener and the other is a lower middle order bat. it is like comparing Sachin and Dhoni to decide who is the best ODI bat ever. However Viru-Raina comparison the middle order bat gets my vote as the better ODI cricketer
IKnowU Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Raina is wayyy ahead. Sehwag is good, but barely reliable.

However Viru-Raina comparison the middle order bat gets my vote as the better ODI cricketer I dont agree. I am not a detractor. I like his game and more so his attitude on the field. He is also fit and a great fielder. But to be on par or better than Sehwag, Raina has to do much more than what he has done currently Viru would walk into any ODI world XI as an attacking opener, Raina wont in his position. Both have certain technical issues, with Sehwag having lack of footwork and with Raina the susceptibility against the short ball. But bowlers have found it easier to exploit Raina's weakness than they have with Sehwag. Raina is wayyy ahead. Sehwag is good, but barely reliable. Arent you the guy who said Jaddu is better than Yuvi :giggle:
Pagalpanti Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Raina > Sehwag??? :hysterical: Some people are way off here...

I think Viru is always judged with his record and overall performance in test cricket and is seen in ODIs like that but he is far from it. You need to keep the two formats apart and you will see Sehwag is not as good as think in ODIs and IMO, he cannot be picked even in one ODI world XI, talk about any.
rkt.india Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Raina > Sehwag??? :hysterical: Some people are way off here... In ODIs, not in tests. Sehwag has not justified or performed to his talent in ODIs throughout his career in ODIs.

The ICC thinks otherwise.
ganeshran Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 In ODIs' date=' not in tests. [b']Sehwag has not justified or performed to his talent in ODIs throughout his career in ODIs. Not sure if serious.
BeautifulGame Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Rahane 7/10 Parthiv 3/10 Gambhir 6/10 Kohli 8/10 Raina 8/10 MSD 9.5/10 Ashwin 8/10 Aaron 8/10 Jadeja 9/10 PK 4/10 VK 5/10 Yadav 7/10 Tiwari 6/10
rkt.india Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Not sure if serious. No I am serious. You can take a lot at his ODI career and you wont be disagree with me. This was the reason that he had to give that statement before EC that he wants to bat 50 over in ODIs, because he was not doing justice to his talent in ODIs. Even Saurav Ganguly has raised this issue about Sehwag several times about his ODI career. Sehwag has disappointed match after match in ODIs. it was just in last 2 years since NZ series that he has some good numbers which increased his average too, but before that his average in ODIs was 31 which cannot be called anything great for an opener mostly batting on flat tracks. He used to throw his wicket and there was no consistency.
saneindian Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Sehwag vs Raina? Why would you even do that? One is an opener, other a finisher. One has played for India for 10+years, the other has played 100 odd matches for us. Both have done well for us. End the debate there.
BeautifulGame Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Sehwag is highly inconsistent for us ODIs throughout his career.People shouldnt confuse his test form with ODI foerm. Raina has always has been consistent and also have to consider batting in middle order is much harder than batting as opener in India which makes Raina's performances even more impressive. So Raina is a more valuable ODI player than Sehwag. Also Sehwag wont get into world XI.Sachin and Watson are the best 2 Openers in world today IMO.

He used to throw his wicket and there was no consistency. I have seen him batting right from his debut, and yes I still disagree with you. Sehwag had his lean patches but he bounced back wonderfully. He is an impact player and can put pressure on the opposition by batting even for just the first 10 overs. The problem is that people take a look at statsguru and conclude that since his average is below 40 he isnt that good. Because of a solid middle order he had the license to go for his shots and he did. Most of the times it came off, sometimes it didn't. Sehwag disappointing match after match is a grossly inaccurate statement.
ganeshran Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Also Sehwag wont get into world XI.Sachin and Watson are the best 2 Openers in world today IMO. Again, the ICC disagrees with you
BeautifulGame Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Again' date=' the ICC disagrees with you[/quote'] Who cares what ICC thinks? When did they start doing sensible things? U think Sehwag is a better ODI batsman than Sachin just like ICC then?

Remember he lost his spot in the 11 even for the WC following a not so good SA ODI series which ended a bad 2010 for him. It was the failure of Yusuf Pathan in the earlier WC matches which got Raina back into the team. Post that Raina had a horrific WI ODI series, has done well since then though.

Sehwag disappointing match after match is a grossly inaccurate statement. You are in illusion. If that was the case, Ganguly would not have talked about it openly in commentary box. 10 over batting never helps team where he scored 10 or 50 in those 10 overs. Look at WC 2011 semi final, he started well, but got out after getting set at the wrong time and batsmen coming after him did not find it easy once ball got older and if it was not for Raina's innings and SRT's missed chances, we would not have been in final. These things happened a lot in Sehwag's career. You never leave it to others. if you are set, bat long, which happened rare in case of Viru.

WE can play without Sehwag in ODIs and has been playing for long time, but without Raina in middle and slog overs and his fielding and energy on the ground, team looks incomplete.

But my "Sehwag wouldnt get into world XI "was a reply to a separate comment referring to sehwag's place in ICC XI
