carnish Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 Dhoni should be rested from some tests rather than resting him from the ODIs cause i think we need Dhoni in ODIs more than we need him in tests and even he likes that format... plus sehwag as a leader in my opinion is not the best guy.... its like wat the lankans did by giving the captaincy to dilshan and see where SRL are
yoda Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 We thought Saurav was a passenger in tests. Dhoni seems to be worse.

carnish Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 And who will keep? thats what they are taking the reserve keeper saha to do... in order to play him if dhoni gets injured... same thing he can keep if dhoni rests
The Outsider Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 And who will keep? Saha is a much better keeper than Dhoni - at the very least he does not stand a million miles behind the stumps or gives an incredulous look when a catch flies between him and first slip. On pattas, Dhoni's batting has no match - he is a serious contender for the FTB of the decade award, but in bowling friendly conditions there is nothing to choose between their batting either.
punjabi_khota Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 While Dhoni's technique undoubtedly sucks in testing conditions, he has that jugaado brain that sometimes helps him cope unlike say Yuvraj or maybe Raina or some other batters who failed in foreign conditions, and simply can't manage.

At the very least he can trash the opposition into submission on pattas - the joker brigade can;t even do that!
Sachinism Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 @Outy I've not seen much of Saha and I doubt you've seen too much either, don't know how you concluded he is much better than Dhoni. Dhoni was amateur in England, but apart from that his keeping is actually pretty good. Edit: 200+ dismissals already

This is exactly based on what? And there has already been enough debate about why even being a great flat track bully is a great achievement for a keeper and not something to whinge about. And how many times u have seen Saha bat in bowler friendly conditions to come to that conclusions? Dhoni has plenty of vital knocks away from home so what exactly did u base that Saha can have similar contributions considering no keeper in our recent history has made similar contributions.
phaedrus Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 it is quite upsetting seeing him bat like this in tests. no options though, he is still the best bet. we have to persist with him

The Outsider Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 Saha is a better keeper than Dhoni based on what I've seen because he does not shy away from standing at a respectable distance to pace bowlers behind the stumps, unlike Dhoni who screws up the entire slip and gully cordon because he is not comfortable gathering deliveries. As for observing Saha over a long run, it's true I have not and neither has anyone else, nor will anyone get a chance to observe him because Dhoni has a monopoly on his test spot based on his exploits in ODIs and tamasha cricket. Yeah, our selectors were brave enough to not select Harbhajan and Yuvraj today, but to discard Dhoni would lead to mini riots.
Sid Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 Even me as a fan dont expect anything from him when he comes to bat these days in test crkcet, which is a stark contarst to his early days as a captain keeper when he used to contribute regularly at crucial times.Something has gone wrong somewhere which I cant pin point because he was scoring consistently before that Lankan tour in 2008 with the same technique. Massive test coming up in Aus,where he flopped with the bat on the last test tour,so there will be added pressure on him to improve that record.I hope contributes with the bat the way he did in SA tour last year. And as far as keeping is concerned, for the millionth time I have to repeat he isnt a mediocre keeper.

I think that you're being too harsh on Dhoni's keeping though- yes, he is no Alan Knott but I don't think he is terrible either. Dhoni's batting has been a let down and he does not have the game to be a consistent test batsman but as a package he is still our best choice right now.

I might be old fashioned, but I really don't get this "package" thing when it comes to test cricket. Test cricket is a game for specialists. Dhoni wasn't too shabby till around a year back and there really wasn't much competition around, but now Saha has come up as the better keeper. I think Dhoni still deserves a run, but his replacement should depend only on his keeping skills and not on his batting, which is hacky at best anyways. Ideally, the Australia team should be a barometer for his spot in the team based on his keeping skills - things like not having to see catches falling short of the slip cordon in a place like Australia or Dhoni glancing at Dravid after scratching his balls when an edge flies between them. But Dhoni is a superstar in India based on ODI and tamasha cricket and his presence even in the test team will never even come under scrutiny.
carnish Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 How many mistakes did we see from dhoni behind the stumps in this series to be serious?? yes he did struggle in england but everyone was and him being the captain also affected him mentally and those who call saha as a better keeper should just shut up.... first he is a midget.. 2nd dhoni gets his finger battered for over 200 days in an year and how many days does saha keeps wickets??? and biggest question... what are the kind of bowlers he keeps too?? i seriously havent seeen saha in domestic but whatever i saw of him in the few games he played for IND he wasnt anything spectacular though safe which dhoni is most of the times... dhoni has performed pretty well behind the stumps for some 7 years now... cut him some slack guys and he maybe a FTB but he is definitely better than saha or karthik on any conditions...
BeautifulGame Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 Its kind of funny how every keeper in domestic cricket is claimed better than Dhoni even without watching them properly. But then there are some who still claim Dinesh Karthick should be selected ahead of Dhoni because he is a better batsmen. So not really surprising how there are people trying to justify Saha or Parthiv being selected ahead of Dhoni. Dhoni had excellent series in Australia SA and NZL as keeper apart from being mostly very good in India all through his career. He is arguably the best keeper for spinners in the world at the moment too.Its only in England his keeping suffered. If he is a suddenly a mediocre keeper just based on England series and deserves to be dropped and then all our batsmen apart from Dravid are mediocre and deserves to be dropped too. Hell how many times a wicket keeper has scored a century in Indian history.Yet we complain Dhoni is a poor batsmen based on this series he scored a century. Dhoni is going through a bad patch as test batsmen no denying that but calling him tail ender and cant bat overseas are just ignorant and short term memory. This is the same Dhoni who saved the lords test in 2007 , Scored 96 in SA last summer and played plenty of other vital knocks for us in the past even in overseas.
The Outsider Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 For those trying to claim the England series is the only series where Dhoni has been poor, he was equally bad if not worse in West Indies.
Sid Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 What about prior to that ? He is certainly a better keeper than what you rate him.
