Guys..the whole issue is fitness. Already we have two guys (ZK & IS) whose fitness is not 100%. Its OK if the Aussies fold up for 250 or 300. It is when they are going to score 400+ when the fitness of bowlers are going to be really tested. And no matter what Ayurveda treatment Sreesanth has got, there is not enough time to prove his fitness...and if the selectors are going to be so stupid, we are going to have another England-like nightmare. Mithun is OK...but he is average everything...speed, ability, swing. Only thing in his favour is his fitness and athleticism. Since the selected guy is going to be the 5th Pacer, it would have been better to take a Rookie like Abu Nechim or Manpreet Gony. But one gets the feeling its going to be Mithun.

Sreesanth fails fitness Test

In a bid to find a replacement for injured Praveen Kumar for the Australian Test series, Kerala speedster S Sreesanth was summoned by the BCCI to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore on Saturday to assess his fitness. As expected, the seamer, who is carrying a toe-injury injury, failed the test. It is learnt that the seamer would be out of action for six to eight weeks. Sreesanth is undergoing ayurvedic treatment for his injury in Coimbatore and has been asked to report in NCA on December 12. Though Sreesanth was not part of the Indian Test team to Australia in 2007, he was part of the One-day team that won the triangular series Down Under. With the Commonwealth Bank series in Australia starting in February, Sreesanth would be racing against time.

So Sree ruled out now. Mithun could get lucky.

(TOI Photo)MUMBAI: At 18, Irfan Pathan was hailed as 'the next big thing in Indian cricket'. The next superstar, as he bowled his way into the hearts of fans, with his prodigious swing back in 2003. At 21, three years later, he became 'Indian cricket's biggest tragedy'. He was even back from the South African tour in December 2006 because of poor form. Since then, there has been nothing but a fight to stay fit and come back into the Indian team. For the last two years, Pathan has been so badly hit by a back injury that he wasn't able to play a single first class match. At 27, he again presents a strong case to replace an injured Praveen Kumar in the squad for the Test series in Australia. Playing after a lengthy gap following injuries to his back and hamstring, the left-arm seamer has made an impact. Irfan has taken 21 wickets in four Ranji games for Baroda so far this season. It is a haul that includes three five-fors which have come at a measly average of 14.14. Though he faces stiff competition from Karnataka seamers Abhimanyu Mithun and Vinay Kumar and a few others too, the 'decision-makers' may tilt more towards Irfan's all-round package and experience, especially in Australian conditions. Sreesanth's ouster from the race due to injury has only boosted the Baroda man's case. Most of the experts TOI spoke to -- including a few national selectors -- were excited with Irfan's return. TA Sekhar, the bowling consultant with Delhi Daredevils, saw Irfan bowl at the Ferozeshah Kotla in New Delhi, where he took seven for 114. "He is a much improved bowler now because he is getting the ball to move both ways. I saw him bowl in Delhi and was quite impressed. A left-arm seamer is at his best when he brings the ball into the right-hander," Sekhar told TOI. With Irfan, the pertinent point, besides swing, is pace. Is he up to it? "He was never that quick, but if you can move the ball while clocking around 132 km/hr, it is good enough," reasons Sekhar. "He is a hard working cricketer, and that shows in his comeback performances, as well as his fitness," says a national selector. A member of the national selection panel spells out where Irfan holds the edge. "In Irfan's case, he is an all-rounder and at present, India needs all-rounders," he says. There are skeptics too. Like Rajat Bhatia, who was part of the seven scalps which Pathan took against Delhi at the Kotla. "He was getting the ball to move, but he was bowling around 118 km/hr and at that pace he is going to put little fear in the minds of Aussie batsmen," says Bhatia. Former India all-rounder Manoj Prabhakar is even more blunt. "Let's not get excited over Pathan because he is taking wickets in the Ranji Trophy. Against Delhi, it took him 30 overs to take seven wickets. In the same match, Ashish Nehra took nine wickets. Why are we ignoring him? The important thing is, is he bowling fast? If he can't touch 135, there is no point taking him Down Under," he says.

Rising pacer to leave early for Australia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Following the debacle in England, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is leaving no stone unturned in terms of preparations for the Australia tour. In a welcome move, the BCCI has decided to send young fast bowler Umesh Yadav along with the Test regulars early to get a feel of the conditions in Australia, ahead of the Test series starting on December 26. It was confirmed to HT that Yadav, with six other players and four support staff, will leave on December 8. The rest of the squad will leave after the last ODI on December 11. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Ishant Sharma, Pragyan Ojha and Wriddhiman Saha are the others who will depart early. The national selectors and the team management felt Yadav "would be better off getting used to Australian conditions rather than playing in two meaningless ODIs against West Indies". Taking into consideration that there would be a lack of net bowlers, the BCCI has also decided to send Raghu, from the National Cricket Academy, who operates the bowling machine. Irfan to return? With Yadav set to leave early, Baroda speedster Irfan Pathan has emerged the front-runner to be named as Praveen Kumar's injury replacement, for both the Australia Tests and the last two ODIs versus West Indies. Rajat bhatia put a disappointing statement- Irfan is swinging at 118K.....that's hugely disappointing.....u can't play him in the eleven as India normally play only 4 bowlers 6 batsmen and dhoni...if india wanna play 5 batsmen 4 bowlers and Allrounder Irfan, then he shud be pickeD else if he is a part of 4 bowlers then I am soRry..the 3 I select are Zak Ishant Umesh...and if Zak is unfit then Ishant Umesh and aaron.... So if dhoni wants just 4 bowlers(3 pacers and aswin) then irfan shudnt be selected as I feel DINDA, ABU nachim and even Mithun cud be Ahead of irfan when it comes to play as a fast bowler is concerned....if Dhoni agrees to play 5 batters and him and 4 bowlers and One All rounder then taking Irfan makes sense as he is an allrounder not Just a Main Pacer......
