Utalk Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 If someone was going through record books and looked at a player who scored 2 double hundreds,4 100s and average of 54 in just 17 test matches. He would stop there and try to find some answers. Has there ever been a player who starts of his career with average of 100+ in his first season but could not buy a run after that. 17 21 1 1084 227 54.20 4 3 Looking at these numbers they are not just good but extra ordinary. He scored in India and SL against Eng and Lanka. He failed in his only test in NZ but what I find mind boggling is his failure in Ind after his debut season. He scored only 110 runs in ten test matches. I know that is poor BUT Didn,t he show enough already that he could play? Why was he given more chances? He played his last test in 95. I know likes of Dravid and Ganguly emerged in 96 Eng tour but how could you waste a great talent he showed from his school days. He was talked in the same breath as Sachin. I know he was known as a party animal and heavy drinker but there must have been more to his exclusion. His FC stats are mind blowing. First-class 129 181 14 9965 262 59.67 35 44 Those of you who followed cricket in late 80s and 90s I would love your feedback on Kambli.
Cricket_2_Death Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I would like to hear what people say as well. I was far too young and started watching cricket long after he was gone. Looking at the stats I'm also puzzled as to why he didn't play more cricket with that kind of an average.

At that time there were roumors that, even on match days he would come back early morning after a night of 'activites'. He was not supposed to listen to anyone..Coach captain, etc. He was given enough opportunities.

Raghav_12 Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 His career didn't last really lonh owing to multitude of reasons - Bad technique against quality bowling, Descipline issues and Hard luck. After starting test career in big-bang manner, including back-to-back double centuries and two centuries in Sri Lanka, he ran into WI who was still a force are even on Indian picthes. His technique was badly exposed in three test matches of that series. After that, India did not play much of Test Cricket for next two-three years so Kambli could not get a chance immediately to improve his image which was shattered by WI quicks. And, during these 2-3 years, Dravid and Ganguly emerged and with Sachin and Azhar being certainty in middle order there was no space left for Kamble to grab. Overall, I think he could have got some more chances and got a unfair deal in hindsight. He played total five series of three tests each and two series of 1 Test. 3 test series vs Eng - Success (Double Century) 3 Test Series vs SL in SL- Success (Two centuries , Half of the series was washed out) 3 Test Series vs SL in Ind - Success (India never got to play two innings in any test) 3 Test Series vs WI in Ind - Failed badly 3 Test Series vs NZ in Ind - Series washed out completely. So, it can be said that he was dumped from Test cricket too quickly, though kept getting chances in ODI's. Cricspin 1
saneindian Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Kambli got figured out by the WI quicks. He was just as bad as Raina (if not worse)against short pitch bowling. He did not do himself any favor by his irresponsible behavior and discipline issues. He kept getting chances in ODI's till about 2000 but by then he was competing with RD' date=' SCG,VVS and these were all far superior batsmen. Thats the short story of Ganpat Kambli.[/quote'] Exactly. Thing with Raina was he scored runs in India struggled abroad, Kambli failed against WI in India with scores of 40, 0, 0, 6, 18, 0 getting out almost everytime to short ball. He was never the same batsman again. And then post the 96 WC, we played a tri series in SL where there were reports of indiscipline because of which he was ignored for the tour of Eng. And then Dravid and Dada and a year later VVS came onto the scene and Kambli's fate was sealed.
akshayxyz Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Discipline issues and his bad form coincided with emergence of Dravid, Ganguly, VVS.
Needforspeed Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 well tht guy didn't deserved to be in national team if this is true wht took them so long to drop him? remeb how career of symonds ended? People had a certain sympathy for him because he came from a poor background. Plus there was a tendancy in those days to bracket Sachin and him together. I dont think any present day Indian team management would have put up with his unprofessional behaviour that much.

MCcricket Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Kambli used a very heavy bat, and had 5 to 6 layers of rubber on his bat handle, had his own technique, batted bottom hand, first movement was across the stumps and his leg stump was exposed all the time.He was not good with faster bowlers, short balls, was not mature, swore at his team mates, hit his girl in front of his team during a tour,he had talent could work on his short comings.I guess coming from his back ground could not handle success, Sachin tried hard to get him in the team , when Sachin was captain he did play a bit , then he just faded. NareshK Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 He was just the same as many Indian batsmen who score heavily in domestic cricket and sub continent conditions but dont do well against pace, swing, seam and bounce in Australia, South Africa, England, West Indies and New Zealand(back then). He also had discipline issues. I think he was given a lot more chances than many other batsmen who did better than him simply because people always associated him with Sachin(or the opposite of him - dark skin, left handed, flamboyant but just as talented) , he was from Mumbai and also he had a fantastic start to his career(2 back to back double tons).
