Some rely on history and reputation more than delivery in a game. Reputation and past glories mean less than nothing when it comes to current results, hows the old saying go - "you're only as good as your last hit". Brian Lara was great, has a fantastic reputation, given that how did he missout, hang on shouldn't Ambrose and Walsh be there too!!!!

Apart from that all of Sankakara's runs were scored in flat wickets of Srilanka and Dubai.Even in Srl in the only tough wicket(1st test ) he failed completely.So its not really surprising he was ignored
