Tendulkar is one of the most committed players in the team. It would be a folly to single him out and drop him right now when other players like Laxman and Dravid should go first. It does not make sense to phase out all seniors at the same time. If Tendu is the andhon mein kana raja, then we should certainly get rid of other blind folks first... coz SRT will still make runs even with one eye closed. This is what Kirsten said recently about Tendulkar: "People only talk about his genius," Kirsten said. "They don't get to see the backroom. I do. And I only see intense preparations, hours and hours of practice, sweat, hard work, leaving nothing, absolutely nothing to chance." Cherry picking the man because he's not able to get his 100th 100 right now, will not undermine his level of commitment to the game.

This. No need to look beyond that :)
I advocated for Tendulkar's place in the side when he went through a slump last time round and even after the England series. But with a scoreline of 0-7 which might become 0-8 and no tests outside the subcontinent for two more years, what's the point in carrying any of the three batsmen? What will it prove? That they can score at home? We all know they can score at home. But can they score in tough conditions away from home? The answer is evident if you step outside your mandir.

people in this thread assured me that freaking made up record didnt affect Sachin but obviously the pressure has got to him,he is making mistakes which we never see from him. This is the reason why i wanted him to get the record in the odis against WI.

Why first or last? Why not get rid of them all together? What is the Indian team and Indian cricket going to achieve by Tendulkar scoring a few more runs at home only to flop again the next time he encounters tough conditions overseas. 7 straight tests is no small sample - it's definite proof that his ability to score in tough conditions is gone.

But when you say he deserves his spot less than the others, then I question your intentions[/quote'] Well one can nitpick about who deserves a spot a bit more or a bit less, but the broad point is that the time is up for all three. They simply can't score in tough conditions anymore on a consistent basis. Yeah, they might still show the occasional flash of brilliance like Dravid did in England or Tendulkar has done in some cameos but on a broad level the game is up for all of them.

Sachin retiring will also give Sehwag the chance to drop down to no.4 where he will be better protected against new ball and will be much more effective. So we wont be inexperienced in middle order either. So really there in no real need for Sachin to play at best after England series apart from filling his stats. Frankly i dont have much hope of our seniors retiring voluntarily.None of them retired voluntarily in ODI cricket so they arent suddenly gone change their mind set and retire. Selectors need to show some responsibility and ask them to either retire or face the chop.It may happen in Laxman's case due to the humiliations but very much doubt Dravid and Sachin will retire any time soon. Whats more likely to happen unfortunately is they will play another 2 years filling their stats in home conditions and retire just before our away tours meaning we will again get thrashed with a bunch of inexperienced youngsters

Surely if he is still one of the top 6 batsman in the country and is still enjoying his cricket, he should play on.

The fact is that experience counts for something. It is not a good idea to get rid of all senior players at one go...because the youngsters at times will need guidance. Out of the three stalwarts, Tendulkar should be the last one to go. We should phase them out gradually. Don't give the system a big shock by dropping all three at once. You could argue otherwise and say that the youngsters will not be any worse than this, but no coach or selection committee will ever agree to sack all seniors. Experience counts and it's effect shows not only on the ground but in the dressing room as well.

For two years, India is not touring outside the subcontinent. This is the ideal time to play the youngsters and get them adapted to test cricket, so that by the time we do tour abroad there would be some chance of them scoring runs. We already know that Tendulkar can no longer score runs in tough conditions on a consistent basis and neither can Dravid or Laxman. Last year has shown ample proof of this.

Sachin wont play for long and certainly wont be avalable for our next away series. So if Sachin plays for next 2 years and then we have to blood a youngster in an away series it will only affect our chances of winning there. Also dont argue that he is in good form so he shouldnt retire.Plently of greats have retired when they were in great form because they put team ahead of them.Warne macgrath and Waugh all legends retired when they were in top form.So there in nothing wrong with retiring when u are in top form rather than being pushed out.

Actually, even if he is available two years later it's clear based on the last 7 tests that his ability to score in difficult conditions is gone. There is no upside in carrying any of the three except individual stats boosting at home.

If we don't bring in youngsters and phase out the seniors after a 0-7 debacle when we have no away tours for the next 2 years, don't know when will it do so. At least 2 should go now (Dravid and laxman) and at most Tendulkar can play till end of the year. That's the best we can do and hope selectors grow a pair and make the tough call for once.

Well yes that will happen, but I don't agree that all three be dropped at once. I am advocating gradual replacements for the reasons I stated above. You want all three sacked at once, and I disagree with that approach. We might have been, at least, one series late on this!

It will only delay the debut and adjustment of the replacements. What knowledge will he impart in 1 or 2 series?

When everyone else is a walking wicket, it allows the opposition to continuously attack. (Anyway we're gonna disagree here) Agree with the other point, time to get in new blood and give them time to gain some experience. Allow us to find who has it in them and who doesn't. 2 years of playing at home is pointless for any of the oldies. More than just that, its time for an Argus review on BCCI/India. The administrators need to be held accountable for the selections made, the inaction after the whitewash in England.

Everyone was a walking wicket in England too, but Dravid did manage to score. Sure, it's tougher to score when everyone else is failing but it's possible and Tendulkar at the top of his game has done it as well. An Argus review is simply a pipe dream. The first thing any review committee is going to say is that the likes of Srinivasan and Srikkanth should be sacked and the BCCI knows it so will never set up anything like it.
