Legacy of our legends

I don't think Any of their "triumphs" in Test Cricket can compensate for this 6-0 losing streak. Which series triumph are we referring to ? The one in Eng , WI or Pak where we won 1-0 ?
As individual players who brought a lot to the game.

And continue playing beyond your sell by date is not selfish? Guess Gilchrist was quite selfish. Let's see what call these players make after the series is over. If they continue to play tests at home after the last 2 away series debacles' date=' would you term them selfish then?[/quote'] Look at what happened to Australia after all greats retired at once. Imagine if Ponting had retired too. Look at what happened to west Indies after Lara retired at peak. These Indian players put their legacy on line for the team. I don't understand you guys. On the one hand you talk about records being unimportant and team goals and now all of a sudden legacy is all important.

Check my signature. The triumph were we were the second team ever to be ranked no 1.

That's the sad part. They still couldn't do anything of note as a team. Our best results over the last 2 decades have been WC & T20 Cup wins followed by drawn series in Aus & SA and a seies win in Eng. Taking out the shorter format stuff here seniors were not much of a factor, they have hardly achieve anything of note other than individual stats. Our seniors' legacy would be similar to Dan Marino or Jim Kelly's - good players who put up reat stats but didn't translate in any notable team wins.

In such dramatic fashion it does. Especially when people will have the last 2 series in mind.
Only those with short term memory syndrome will think of only last two series when considering careers extending over fifteen years.

Yeah dude, spot on. Who will remember Laxman's 281, Dravid's 270, and Tendulkar's 136? Some old foggies like me who value test cricket. The junta will be filling up IPL stadiums. Even these Indian greats will be remembered more fondly in foreign countries than in ours which relishes in worshiping mediocrity like Dhoni, Raina, and Yuvraj on the basis of their tamasha exploits.

But at the end of the day these stats stand out like Dan Marino's numbers - great stats and numbers but without enough wins. An away win in SA or Aus would have gone a long way in cementing their legacy but we failed big time, especially this Aus tour.

15 years with one away win in Eng and a drawn series each in SA and Aus. This was our best chance to beat Aus in Aus and we blew it big time.

Punter was like this until this series lol. we have revived his career.
We have kick-started Warner's as well, and may do the same with Cowan. By the way there was cloud on Clarke's captaincy before the series especially the way Aus performed in SA aand against NZ. We have made him into a Mike Brearley reincarnation who can bat :haha:

What rubbish!Sachin,Dravid and Laxman can only bat, they cannot bowl for others and India always had a poor bowling attack. Also if you look at the 6-0 loss for india ,its only sachin & dravid who avg 50+ and yet their legacy will go down?

He always looked good but whenever he could have made the difference he flattered to deceive n Eng an Aus. At Melbourne he could have taken India to a big lead but never could do what Clarke or Ponting did for Aus. His numbers have been good but they have been as useless as tits on a bull in the context of the last 2 series.

Well, those and similar knocks are their legacy. You mentioned Richards somewhere earlier in the thread - he was fairly average over the last 4-5 years of his career, but it has hardly effected his legacy. Even Gavaskar was nowhere as prolific in difficult conditions in the last few years of his career. Don't know why you are bringing other sports into the mix when there are enough examples to choose from in cricket.

Sachin has an average of 57 against Australia in Australia and 55 against England in Eng. End of story. The stats are not misleading. He plundered their attacks in their own home grounds, something which Eng/Aussie batsmen rarely do in the sub continent.

Dravid, VVS -- Retire Gambhir, Sehwag - Dropped Vinay Kumar -- Should never be seen near the ODI or Test team. I dont even care about giving sub standard players chances. Core team of youngsters to play --> Pujara, Kohli, Rohit sharma, Umesh Yadav, Vaaron, Need one more player to replace the opener --??? give sachin a few more series as he has looked the best out of the indian team, and someone for youngsters to play around.

Granted Sachin hasnt done well in the last two tours and Dravid in this tour, but its ridiculous to say their legacy has been tarnished because of bad performance in a series or two.

Go and watch Viv's series vs us before the Kingston ton in 89, followed by series vs Eng and Aus. So do people remember him by those series only now? Kallis was an epic fail in England in 2008. He got cleaned up by yorkers a few times and averaged about 15. Who even remembers that now? A few SA and English fans and the odd neutral who likes tests. Gilchrist was not a force after the 2005 Ashes. I'm sure someone can dig up his stats post-2005 summer. His keeping was terrible towards the end as well. None of them retired at their "peak".

Like it or nt but no such luxuries afforded to SRT and Dravid and they will come under much harsher scrutiny than Richards did.

Bhajji is the greatest. He quit the English tour with a b00b injury. And he's quit this tour even before it started, he knows when to exit. May be SRT deserves a longer rope. All the other feckers need to be booted out.
