Every single file you download from the internet could be full of undesirable bugs. You have to be sure of the source. And it's always wise to let your antivirus examine the files before using them.

even if i get clearance from AVG, would there still be hidden viruses that it would not be able to detect

even if i get clearance from AVG' date=' would there still be hidden viruses that it would not be able to detect[/quote'] AVG is good, but there is always a chance that some bugs would get past your security. But it's a risk one has to take, especially if the file is downloaded from unreliable sources.

Why do we have to openly condone piracy? :((
No one is condoning it. He asked about the possibility of getting virus if a pirated MS software is downloaded. It could be because of his interest in computer security. He never said that he has downloaded or is going to download such software. Similarly, I answered telling him the possibilities, I did not encourage him to download any illegal software on the net. Simple. If someone asks about the law regarding murder in certain circumstances and someone else answers it, will you accuse them of condoning murder?

Customized editions/packs are more likely to be 'bugged' - regardless of number of positive reviews online. But, with the 'original' releases, you will need to run some crack, unless its some simple registry fix - ( that one can verify ), there is always a risk that the 'crack' can plant some virus or backdoor or something.

Most pirated software have trojans or worms in them. Better to avoid them as much as possible - atleast the operating system and the antivirus. Any other software, you can run inside a virtual machine to be on the safer side.

  1. Always download from a reputated source
  2. Don't download any torrent without reading comments/reviews from previous users..if a torrent doesn't have any comments or reviews...DO NOT download
  3. Create partition and also install Linux - Ubuntu pref stable version...Linux is open source and legit and can always be a back up in case WIN falters
  4. If you're in college...you can always buy WIN at a cheaper student price and it will be legit

at first install in a VM ( e.g. VirtualBox), and run the required tests/scans ( for malwares, viruses, rootkits, suspicious network activity) in the VM-image - that still is not foolproof, but reduces the risk significantly.
