Add to this our own domestic muslim electorate who cannot help but stay beholden to their pan-religious identity. Last assembly elections in Bihar, Laloo and Paswan had an Osama look alike accompany them to rallies. If they could, our politicians would invite Hafeez Saeed to canvass for them.[/b[ On another thread in the Politics section, I came across a post by the poster "saneindian" in which he had written in some detail about this Osama look alike. Apparently, the gent is a philanthropist of some sort and has generously donated to local charities/NGOs. Unfortunately for him, he happens to look like Osama. For all we know, the crowd pull factor could also be due to his philanthropy and not just his physiognomy. Just saying. I'm not denying that the likes of Laloo/Paswan are beyond employing such tactics. Neither am I denying that *some* Indian Muslims might eulogize Osama, but IMO, this kind of stuff has no broad based appeal. It is a repulsive tactic, and the people rejected Paswan and his silly antics.

Party sources said that Khalid Noor is a young man from Narpat Ganj in Bihar. He had sought an election ticket from Paswan only on the ground that he looked like Osama, but Paswan had turned it down. However, he decided to make use of him for campaigning. The search function on ICF isn't really very good, or else I would have searched for that post and the link that 'saneindian' posted. I wasn't making any judgement, just reiterating the various views on the topic that I came across. This whole episode is shameful, to say the least. That a politician canvases using a terrorist look alike. And whats worse is that he perceives the lookalike will fetch him votes. Speaks volumes about what he thinks about the Muslims in his constituency. Whether that perception is real or false, one can only guess. But I hear Paswan horribly lost those elections. So there still is hope.

An example of a platonic relationship- the one between Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma in wake up Sid. Actually platonic has another connotation, i.e. theoretical and idealistic, rather than actionable. In that context, it would apply.

I think you are being naive if you think religious sentiments and religious extremists are not popular especially when it comes to gaining votes. Each and every party uses them whether they be Islamic Jihadi prostitutes or Bajrang Dal bastards or Christian pedophiles. It's the same with all parties and it is rather sad that our population still votes on these divisive tactics. But I believe the winning party/coalition used Shatrughan Sinha, who, in his days, was quite a terror too. :P And we all know where he stands vis a vis freedom of speech and expression. But the reason he didn't win is because the people (Muslims included) of Bihar ( or that constituency at the very least) didn't find the idea of Osama lookalike attractive enough either. Can we get back to discussing the Indian-Israeli partnership?
