Errr....he was the first man along with Hillary to make a successful ascent of the highest peak in the world - attempting which people actually died before and after him, not to mention several others who have lost their limbs. Some perspective would be useful.

ANYONE can be trained quite quickly to "climb a mountain" but not anyone can be the best batsman alive consistently for 20 yrs, people have climbed mountains since but no one has emulated Tendulkar.

In Vienna Sports Club, there stands a statue of Dhyan Chand with four hands and four sticks Dhyan chand was so good at hockey, after witnessing his skills in the Berlin Olympics finals Hitler offered him the rank of a Colonel in the German army, if he accepted German citizenship, Dhyan Chand refused. Tendulkar has not reached these heights in his sport in terms of skill alone... longevity and records is another matter.

nballa Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 the game had become batsman friendly when sachin arrived at the international scene with protective gear and covered pitches and smaller grounds so his records while lovely aren't all that great. not that the bcci is smart enough to realize this before deciding not to put his name forward but they inadvertently made the right decision.

Bharat Ratna ( as it was conceived) was meant to be an award for service to society. No matter how many 100s Tendulkar scores or how many trundlers he lofts for 6, his contribution to Indian society is minimal. I'm even against entertainment artists getting the award. Is Tendulkar's impact on the future of India comparable to that of Dr. Ambedkar or Vinoba Bhave? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Its shameful that a government of a country of a billion+ has to confer its highest civilian title on sports persons. Worse still, add sports persons as a category for this award. :mad:

Mariyam Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 No it is YOU that needs perspective and a reality check to go with it ... because few of the previous recipients were bonafide chors occupying supposedly respectable positions of public "Servants" ( glorified word for professional thieves in India ) ... if anything Tendulkar receiving this award would raise the bar for qualification. Most of the recipients have done Public Service without being Public Servants. You have social reformers, writers of our constitution, independence fighters, visionaries and the few professional servants that you mention. My angst is not against Sachin per se. It is against inclusion of sports people in this award. Please justify why a cricketer should get a Bharat Ratna? Unless he has any public service credentials that is?

Inspire those who watch them with their work ethic and contribution to the Nation's glory, which Cricket definitely does. 20 years from when they retire, what will be the impact of their work on Indian society. Vis a vis the impact of a Dr. Ambedkar 20 yrs from the day he retired. Therein lies your answer. They all impact different segments of the society in their own way. It is not meaningful to compare on person's contribution with another.
