BANGALORE: The recently reconstituted Karnataka senior selection committee sure missed a trick when they denied themselves the chance to groom a second line of wicketkeepers for the state team. When the three Karnataka teams for the KSCA hosted All India Shafi Darashah tournament were picked a couple of days back, the Stuart Binny-led KSCA President's XI ended up with Robin Uthappa as the first choice wicketkeeper. Now it is not as if Uthappa hasn't kept before but whenever he has done so, it's mostly in the shorter versions of the game and either as a stop-gap measure or to fulfill the need for a better balance in the playing eleven. With him picked so for a tournament wherein the matches are all four-day affairs, either the selectors are making it clear that the state is suffering from a serious drought when it comes to wicketkeepers or they are simply pandering to the wishes of the player himself. Uthappa has apparently asked to be picked as a wicketkeeper-batsman henceforth in all forms of the game, perhaps seeing it as a route back into the Indian team in one format or the other. The talented Kodava is certainly entitled to his views and wishes but for the selectors to fall in line, is certainly something else. There is a thought though that by selecting him a wicketkeeper for the pre-season tournament, Uthappa has in a way been asked to walk the talk. Should he perform well behind the stumps, he could then become a serious contender for the Ranji side too, at least as a second stumper if not the frontline wicketkeeper itself, especially as the incumbent CM Gautam had a terrible last season.Time will tell.

Uthappa invited Amre to work with him for six months in order to develop as a batsman and advance his potential as true India material. Amre who, at 43, was elected the youngest president of the famous Shivaji Park Gymkhana on Sunday, will proceed to Bangalore on Tuesday to commence his second week of training and coaching with the Karnataka opener. Uthappa made his first-class debut 10 years ago and has played 80 first-class matches, 117 limited-over matches, 38 One-Day Internationals and 11 T20 Internationals, but has not been capped in a Test match. The fee worked out by the two is not known, but it could easily be a double-digit lakh contract. Amre started working with Uthappa in the first week of July. A new challenge ŪtÃÔ a challenge, a new challenge. HeÃÔ played plenty of first-class cricket and for India. But we have started from scratch. I have to work from the fundamentals to technique, physical fitness and mental strength. Initially, itÃÔ doing the routines and drills and then using the bowling machine. ŵhe first two months are important, with emphasis on corrections and then monitoring him in match situations. I will travel wherever he goes; including the matches he plays for Karnataka, said Amre.

Good luck to him,he was in great form in ipl 2010 where he seemed to have regained his mojo but it didnt last.Could play as a finisher for us

yes, he was our leading run scorer in England and scored fifties in almost every match. Dropping Raina in ODIs is laughable:hysterical:but I wouldn't be surprised if the BCCI does that:wall:
