DomainK Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 It was nice to See Usha Hthup receive a film-fare award after all. It was also nice to see the whole industry stand up and applaud her as she delivered a very emotional speech. cgBIHiDNhaA&feature=related I am a big fan of Usha Uthup. She is a very talented singer with one of the most powerful voices. What makes her amazing is the ease with which she can sing. Wish Bollywood had used her more.
mhr123 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 a very diff voice... was not suitable as a playback singer. Yah her albums still rocks.
gaurav92 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Wonderful voice she has. Always thought such voice are rare in film industry and she should have been given lot more chances.
Prakat Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 good on her. very surprised that it was her first. still she's had very few chances.
Sidhoni Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 :hatsoff: surprised to know that it was her first in 42 years!
Mariyam Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 :hatsoff: surprised to know that it was her first in 42 years! Thats coz people weren't sure if she should be nominated for the best play back singer (male) or best play back singer (female) category. She had come to my school years ago. There she sang laung gawacha, didi and my heart will go on. Absolutely talented lady. :hatsoff:

Lurker Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 What a terrific clip! Thanks for sharing DK. Usha Uthup was the reason I walked into Jazz by the Bay on Marine Drive in days when we would have to survive entire month on 3000 Rs. Somehow even during her popular days of Shaan, Disco Dancer, Kasam Paida Karne waale ki etc...it was somehow pop music done at places like Jazz by the Bay that kept her singing career, and perhaps her ghar ka chulha as well, going. As an artist she is great but a shade under the legends. Her voice was never going to be as soothing as a Lata or even a Hemlata but she stayed true to herself. Never changed a thing. Even today shows up with a big gajra in her hair and bindi. Gotta love her for living her life on her terms. Speaking of different voice, with pop and English undertones, here is one that I have been searching for decades. Annette. She was used by RD Burman a lot. And my only insight on her is her name on HMV vinyl discs...anybody here have a clue on Annette? ECMdFbshgpA
Yoda-esque Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I would call her a crooner more than a singer ,but a very good one at that.

As with all things in Mumbai, Jazz by the Bay also had its name changed. In fact, it has changed its name numerous times. It was Jazz by the Bay Then it was Not Just Jazz by the Bay And finally it is called Pizza by the Bay.

Oh I wish!! 80s Jazz by the Bay would be a heaven for the new genre of Western pop music with jazz and more backdrop that was coming up in India. Mine was more in late 90s. I didnt get to see Usha Uthup but it was more like getting to it to absorb the history. It is the same with coffee houses in Delhi and Mumbai. Would love to be a fly on the wall in 70s/80s era and watch the intellactual discussions on movie, music, literature. Thanks for the update. Although it is a sign of times perhaps that it is Pizza by the bay now :-(
