Is batting technique in cricket overrated?

I have been out of ICF and also partially cricket for quite sometime now mainly due to our team's dismal performance for quite sometime now. But after watching all these performances, I seriously am starting to doubt about the importance of batting technique in cricket and especially in overseas conditions. Many of us including me have somewhat said that a good batting technique is the only criteria for performing in overseas especially and also in subcontinental conditions. But to be honest, this theory has been proved to be just BS in the recent Australia tour. When I check the worst performers in the whole tour, they were the so called technically sound batsmen such as Sachin, Dravid, Laxman, Rohit, Sehwag etc. Whereas guys like MSD, Gauti etc. or for that matter even lower order batsmen without being technically sound have performed far better. Even in the past we have seen players such as YP hitting well in South Africa which is again overseas conditions. And he is one of the worst in terms of technique and just a bruteforce cowlasher with hand eye coordination. So, is batting technique overrated in the game of cricket. I am not sure how players without any decent technique can perform worse than these so called best batsmen technically in the world. Even the tukka players hit one big innings 5-6 innings and win the match single handedly. And these masters of cricket are not even doing that. So, perhaps we need to revise our selection process in the future for both domestic as well as overseas conditions. I am seriously starting to doubt the importance of technique in cricket nowadays. A sensible head and a good form is far better criteria from what I have seen recently. And I am seriously thinking that we need to dump some of the seniors including Sachin (in case they do not announce retirement) very soon. We were at the highest level of our cricket a couple of years ago in all forms of cricket. But now we are at the lowest ebb of our cricket since the Ganguly era perhaps and are facing pathetic demolishing defeats with huge run margins or even innings margins. So, this is the best time to experiment as we are at our lowest ebb and cannot decline any further even with an experimental team. And I feel that we need to look into form and courage too in the future and not only depend on technique. If we have some domestic cowlashers who are not afraid and are in good form, I would not mind experimenting with them either to be honest. I have had enough of the BS. /endofrant

all the batsmen u who kept in ur list are old.. and pass there performance date..over all cos of there technique they became legends! while some one like sehwag..is not def a ftb yuvraj with his technique wasnt able to make impact in tests same with raina.. kohli is good technically (not perfect but pretty good basics) so he did well and itsn ot like lower order made 100's or dhoni performed in tests ?

also gambhir has 1-2 small technical probelm which only expose in him tests like poking outside off for odis his technique is pretty good!

Sehwag is a technically sound batsman? Really? Even Laxman's technique is pretty loose when playing against swinging deliveries.

The problem is, these are all intermittent. He has not been able to come up with these kinds of performance consistently. At best, I would call him someone who struggles in seaming/swinging tracks.

He can bat on slow tracks which are difficult for batting, but not when the ball swings.

Like a good chess opening is very important at international chess competitions, a good batting technique is important in international cricket. Good batting technique is very important although there will be an exception in the past, present and future. When batters with bad technique get out of form they look worse, and their bad patch is likely to be more longer. If player starts getting overconfident that his hand eye co-ordination is enough and footwork etc is not then he is helping the bowlers.
